Mental Health and African Americans
  • Poverty level affects mental health status. African Americans living below the poverty level, as compared to those over twice the poverty level, are 3 times more likely to report psychological distress.
  • African Americans are 20% more likely to report having serious psychological distress than Non-Hispanic Whites.
  • Non-Hispanic Whites are more than twice as likely to receive antidepressant prescription treatments as are Non-Hispanic Blacks.
  • The death rate from suicide for African American men was almost four times that for African American women, in 2009.
  • However, the suicide rate for African Americans is 60% lower than that of the Non-Hispanic White population.
  • A report from the U.S. Surgeon General found that from 1980 - 1995, the suicide rate among African Americans ages 10 to 14 increased 233%, as compared to 120% of Non-Hispanic Whites.1

I remember the black brother who played the afro-centric dude in 8 MILE with em committing suicide because he felt like he was never going to get any other roles in movies and he was only like 26 at the time.

i never thought about killing myself. but i can't lie sometimes i get depressed about all these bills i have and stressed out at work.. then i always luck up and find ways to fight it.

I've been dealing with PTSD for years. Never been suicidal but it's the hardest thing I've ever dealt with. No matter how strong you think you are this shyt will show you ,and make you feel otherwise. My deepest condolences to her family.

The treatment for mental health in America is horrible. All they do is give people pills that make them worse.

Yea. They don't care about them because they are such a small percentage of the population that their removal from the labor force doesn't interfere with capital production. fukking disgusting. mental health is rarely talked about in the black community but it needs to be emphasized more

and they lucky to get pills. there so many blacks and latinos who was in the military and they get back home and majority of them don't even get the rehab to adjust back to normal ways of life and most of them end up depressed and homeless

and where i work at a port so many sistas especially the young girls have depression real bad, because most of them are alone with no one to help them and there kids. one girl quit and check herself into a hospital for mental health.

another thing we must stop the drinking and weed smoking in the hood. shyt is tearing our minds up

Its not that its just the fact that he said it, like who was he to say who can and cannot wear a shade of lipstick. I was bothered by it because i get irate when people say 'brown skinned girls cant _____.' Cause i go and do just that. I woulda been all over wearing red lipstick if i wore make up & been taking selfies like a motherfawcker.

i dont think rocky said it in that way, more of "i dont like blacks girls wearing red lipstick" not that they cant.

Mental health in general goes beyond just having depression but also experiences of molestation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, etc.

Yea good point homie; its a very complex issue and that's why I argue that when we write our texts on the black experience that psychology must be a component of the research
