Ultimately your innocence or guilt does not matter when you’re talking about a case of this magnitude. The only thing that matters is doing whatever it takes to be found not guilty (and know not guilty is not that same as innocent). The burden of proof is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. And pushing the case back helps the accused. Evidence can get lost, witnesses story changes, witnesses can die or be unable to testify for some reason. It is what it is. The goal is to be found not guilty not innocent.
