It's crazy man, these NBA nikkas is like super humans compared to us :mindblown:

I remember one time in the park this old nikka told me I have to consistently be able to hit 20 3s in a row and I could make it to the League.

:mjcry:It was too late by then.

LEBRON was on another level dude made this top 50 player in Columbus look like a kid

Trey Burke was good didn't think he was NBA bound he took a great leap at Michigan

Caris levert same thing took a leap in college

Jared Sullinger was good and always had a great jump shot then he added the post moves

Mike redd and kenney Gregory use to go at it mike could do it all

Esteban weaver is the biggest talent I seen fell off dude was LEBRON before lebron in high school

Y'all remember BJ Mullens I thought he was the truth dude had the height and was athletic as hell in high school he was just dunking on everyone

Played against Brendon Hayward... dude was like the only 7 footer in my region and I had to guard him as a 6'5 center. Dude was strong as fukk but not really fast. I did pretty decent against him but I saw him punish a lot of other peeps

Saw TMac in an AAU tourney like 2 games before mine, he was on another fukking level

Played with and against Josh Howard, from a year to year basis on how this dude improved it was unreal like as a freshman he couldnt dunk, soph year he was touching the top of the square, jr year he was averaging a double double and sr year he was hands down the best player in the region, I mean EVERY year he came back much better.

Always knew CP3 was good, but was surprised with how high he took his game.

Saw Lebron in HS when he came to Gboro to play my rival school, he had a slow 1st half and then later in the 2nd half destroyed this dude that the following year went to UNC (Terry something).

I'm trynna think of some other players, I know some cats that played bball but went to the NFL that were baller like Peppers

rob sacre was pretty stiff in high school, did not think he would make the league. he could dunk if wide open, but throwing it to him in the post, at times he would struggle scoring on 6'4 dudes

olynyk was a slow 6'3 guard in grade 10, and then grew 9 inches in two years. he was DEF not league bound before it, and i didn't think he was even with the growth spurt because he still didnt have the athleticism, but that redshirt year at gonzaga really helped him.

it was obvious he was the best talented wing forward amoung anyone probably in the country.
he was just so egotistical at the best physical specimen style high school for sports ever in chicago called mount carmel.
that you knew he was better than everyone just off school alone, but in person it was worse and he had an ego.
plus, he played with a seven foot deaf player that was the illest too.
so, beyond all the talent,...
you had the ego, the mouth, and also the entire catholic league built on seeing mount carmel win.

it was like watching the celtics of the 80's cheat and also beat you via pedigree even if you ramped up to win.
so, it was complete domination generally except for that one game when mount carmel kinda cheated to beat a st ignatius team that was undersized to mount carmel and the mouth's team.

other than that,...he was one of the best i ever saw in person live.

garnett, in person.
garnett was just next level and i got routinely dunked on my him and some other shorter but taller than me guard, he had with him.
who was strong as hell and shytted on me being five foot nuffin too.

that game was the only time where i knew playing up and all the focused play in the world was not helping a damn thing.
plus physically both him and garnett were on supersaiyan compared to where i was at seventeen then, too.

ronnie fields before garnett and during garnett was otherworldly and it is a shame he never panned out.

art barr

Played against Toine from 8th grade thru high school. He was just on another level. The deaf kid was Willie Jones. Him and Toine both went to Visitation together. That was the best 8th grade team in the city. Don't forget they also had McNabb on that Carmel squad. Beat them twice my senior year :smugdraper:

That being said, the best players I played against or saw play live in high school: Jamie Brandon, Rashard Griffith, Kiwane Garris, Toine, Michael Hermon, Ice Mike Allen, Ronnie, Garnett, Tyrone Nesby, Troy Hudson, Q-Rich, Will Bynum, Pooh, and then Jabari. Each name I stated was absolutely dominant in the game(s) I saw or played against them. Ronnie was the only one not to sniff the league, and he would have if not for the accident, bullshyt accusations, etc. Chicago has the best basketball talent bar none.

sometimes you just know theyre going to be a lottery pick. guys like Rasheed Wallace, eddie griffin(RIP), Dejuan wagner, tyreke evans. and shoutout to dejaun blair.

sometimes they didn't really separate themselves as NEXT LEVEL to me. its dudes that i knew would make noise in the NCAA like mark tindale, sean singletary and i would hear about hakim warrick.

specifically kyle lowry. dude was NICE and I wasn't surprised he was doing his thing at villanova, but I didn't expect him to be an all-star or even an nba starter. even when he was at nova, I didn't expect it. but yea, he was NICE in high school, but he wasn't no muhf*ckin MAURICE RICE. that nicca had the city sewn. broke chamberlain's scoring record, crossed Lebron on ESPN and almost made him fall. dude was kinda old tho, was sorta built like khalid el-amin, and had chitty grades. he had to go to some kinda school to get his grades up or something before he popped up at George Washington a couple years later. he was on the '07 squad that was really good. he was like 2nd or 3rd in their clergy system . and hes on the college hoops 2k8 game, but he was prolly like 26 years old by then. he had a lil buzz in the d-league too.

and its a lot of dudes that was nice that didnt make any noise past high school, for one reason or another. whether it be because of basketball reasons or other chit.

I remember malik wayns from simons, and recall seeing john salmons at finley. those are playgrounds. and I heard about flip murray out north. I couldn't tell you what high schools they went to. somebody told me that i know jason Thompson from finley. dudes was NICE. and its a lot of dudes that was NICE that didn't even play high school ball.

I'm from Philly and vividly remember this time period. I graduated in High school in 04. I went to E&S. My pops was refereeing all the games......Public league, catholic league, AAU. He was the ref that got stole on while reffing back in the day by a player SMH.

Part of the reason I'm such a big fan of Lowry now is because I've seen his growth from being at Northeast taking his team to the public league chip and losing to Maureece Rice & Strawberry Mansion and then transferring to Cardinal Dougherty and crushing the Catholic league to killing it at Villanova. I remember going to a catholic league all star game and he was tearing shyt up. There's no way I expected him to be as good as he's been with the Raptors the last 4 seasons tho. He's legit been a top 5 point guard and that's absolutely shocking.

Maureece Rice did have the City on SMASH! You could kinda see Maureece was in trouble as far as going pro tho. Maureece Rice was a shooting guard in a point guard's body and didn't have the ball handling ability. Lowry was actually ranked higher than Maureece coming out of high school despite Maureece having the bigger buzz by breaking Wilt's scoring record, having games where he'd drop 63 against Bodine, being on the cover of the Daily News and getting mentioned in Chris and Neef freestyles ("youngins in the game, kill em like Reece Rice"). I actually remember him playing my high school in our gym and I think he might have been high during the game but he still put up a smooth 25 on my school.

Maureece would have been better served finding his way to the Catholic League as opposed to the Public league which has far less competition. Feels like the Public League is pretty much shytty these days. Once they realize you're good, you get pulled out and end up at a boarding school (like Dion Waiters who was at South Philly high initially and went to boarding school when he turned 15) and they truly prepare you for college. Yeah Maureece Rice went to prep school after high school. I think he could have been Eddie House in the league if he would have had his grades and attitude together and didn't get kicked out of GW towards the end of his college career.

His senior season, in a word, was a disaster. he gave interviews saying he doesn't like interviews, left an Adidas camp because people said he was too selfish, and then was transitioned to point guard at the beginning of the season after an injury to Travis King. He didn't like this role, he wasn't very good at this role, and after being suspended twice during the season, he was finally kicked off the team in March, after averaging just 9.2 points per game.

For lack of a better word or phrase, he just seemed like a nikka that couldn't get out of his own way SMH. He didn't have the work ethic and smarts that Lowry had and that's why he is where he is and why Lowry is where he is. As much as everyone from Jay Wright to numerous NBA teams and coaches have complained about Lowry's attitude, everyone knows how bright he is and how hard dude works. He was finally able to put it together in Toronto with a little luck (given Dolan vetoing the trade to NY) otherwise he would have been a journey man too based on his attitude problems.

I remember the 76ers actually gave Maureeece a tryout back in 09 but he wasn't making the roster with prime Andre Iguodala or Lou Williams (a better version of Maureece's skillset) on the team along with Andre Miller and Willie Green.

I remember I used to read this site tedsilary.com damn near every day in high school....This guy covers high school sports. This guy covered the top players he's seen in Philly basketball (public league & Catholic league) over 35 seasons.........He lists the top 5 then has the other names by school so names like Wayne Ellington (his sister went to Upenn around the same time I attended), Kyle Lowry, Lyn Greer (went to my high school) aren't even in the top 5.

http://www.tedsilary.com/BB35yearteam.htm

RASHEED WALLACE
Simon Gratz, 6-10, '93 Incredibly athletic for his size; even ran track. Regarded as the best tall prospect to come out of Philadelphia since Wilt Chamberlain (Overbrook '55). Led Bulldogs to three Public League championships in 4 years ('90, '91, '93) and a 110-9 overall record. Three times made first-team All-City. Accumulated 1,690 career points, 1,573 rebounds and 661 blocks. Made second-team All-America in second and final season at North Carolina. Played 15 NBA seasons and won a title with Detroit in '04.

EDDIE GRIFFIN
Roman Catholic, 6-9, '00 Smooth and talented. Parade magazine was one of numerous media outlets to name him the national player of the year in 2000. Like Wallace, he was twice the Daily News' City Player of the Year. Spurred the Cahillites to the '00 Catholic League title while averaging 25.4 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Scored 1,656 career points. Was named national freshman of the year at Seton Hall, then entered the NBA. Progress was sidetracked by personal problems. Died in August 2007 of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
LIONEL SIMMONS
Southern, 6-6, '86 Talented, heady and unselfish with the heart of a lion. Led Rams to Public League title in '86. Made second-team All-City as a junior. Made first team as a senior when he averaged 32.8 points and 17.5 rebounds. Scored 1,539 career points (game high of 56). Consensus national college player of the year in 1990 at La Salle, where he scored 3,217 career points. His NBA career was limited to seven seasons by knee miseries.
JEROME "POOH" RICHARDSON
Ben Franklin, 6-1, 1985 Quintessential point guard. Almost always made the correct decision and competed like crazy. Franklin went 66-6 in his three years as a starter and won the Public League title in '84. Averaged 17 points and 11 assists as a senior, 15 and nine for his career. Twice made first team All-City and was the Player of the Year in '85. Starred at UCLA. Played 10 NBA seasons.
MAUREECE RICE
Strawberry Mansion, 6-0, 2003 "The Scorelord" dislodged '55 Overbrook grad Wilt Chamberlain (2,206) as the leading point producer in city history (2,681) and thrice led the Public League in points per game. Starter for Pub champs in '00 and '02. As a senior, he averaged 29.1 points, five rebounds, four assists and 3.3 steals. Co-Player of the Year as a senior. Also a first-teamer in '02 and a second-teamer in '01. Played his college ball at George Washington. Has continued his career in minor league ball.

Lavell Blanchard went to a high school in our conference. His as senior year we beat them at our gym. They beat us by like 30 the first time we played them that year. Can't believe he never made it

nikka would call for oops from half court
That was my HS, and two of my best homies was throwing him those oops :umad:

Dont tell me you went to ypsi or even worse...HURON :demonic:
Oh I know why Lavell Blanchard didn't make it and Jason Richardson did??

Lavell chose to go to UofM. Jason Richardson went to Michigan State . :russ:
...yeah, i have to admit that was it.

And lavell was deciding between michigan and duke. Msu was never on his radar.

I went to U of I and played pickup with and against Deron Williams, Dee Brown and Luther Head. The most glaring difference is those dudes do not miss, and they just play faster. They know what they're doing on the court. No over dribbling.

I'll say D-Will was a more willing passer, while Luther would just jack up shots. I never really saw future NBA talent in Dee. He's not that tall (no way is he 6') and he didn't have super athleticism. He couldn't even dunk.
Did D Will do the :dwillhuh: when you played against him?

depends on who we're talking about.

dudes like Rasheed, griffin, wagner, tyreke, etc. they had it ALL.

kyle lowry - aside from the mere visual of him being a scrawny 10th grader, getting his as a starter on varsity, he wasn't a guy that would really WOW me, and still isn't. hes just a guy that's really skilled at his craft and really gets IT on the I.Q. side of things.

on the other hand - theres hakim warrick, who I never actually saw before Syracuse, but I heard about, and years later, got first-hand accounts from people who he chitted on. he seems like he was more of a physically & athletically gifted type.

if its the players that didn't make it or didn't try to make it, that youre asking me about; dudes usually lacked the size or dedication, or they had other interests(good or bad), or a combination of things.

especially size. no disrespect to jameer nelson - who is small by nba standards himself, but the best player I ever saw on chester was the real short ass point guard that they had about 10 years ago. really, most of the best players Ive ever seen pound-for-pound were smaller guys. even in the league. peep the avi.

Yeah you see Rasheed Wallace tapes from Gratz and it's just fukking unfair.

Wagner was on some shyt too. I'm still sad he got sick and was out of the league after a few years. Glad he got paid tho.

I ran into Jameer at the Farmers Market in Ardmore last year. He is little as shyt by NBA standards. I'm only 5'6 but he really isn't much taller than me.....Just a stocky/husky little nikka.

What ever happened to Mustafa Shakur? I remember he had crazy hype in the early 2000s in Philly. Qdeezy used to have him on the come up show, He was always hyped on tedsilary.com.....I remember he went to Arizona then I never heard from him again? Dude was like the number 1 point guard in the country....WTF?
