Jay probably realized that he could get someone to do Dame's job twice as good with a fraction of the headache. If Dame would've played his "food and beverage" role, he'd still be around. His ego wouldn't allow that.
You only have to look at their respective careers post breakup, to understand how detrimental the relationship was.

Gimme a f*cking break. They told Roc people about the meeting. No one told Dame until the morning of. And he's up there flipping talking about, "you know nikkas don't check their emails!" Dame caught them in the act of trying to make Rocallafella the "sharecroppers" ....a common practice that takes place with indy imprints and major labels....where the indys are discreetly forced out of thier joint parnter roles and just made to provide all the leg work (artist development , talent discoverery and content providing) while the MAJOR sits back and gets the credit and bulk revenue.
here DAME was spazzing out , because they were JOINT PARTNERS yet DEF JAM was trying to treat rocafella like some subserviant subsidary (little guy) when in reality they had the "franchise player" that held DEF JAM down as a whole.
