U.S. influence in France? Le Pen's major gripe is the EU, not the U.S, she's seeking Russian relations to orient France away from the EU. Not to mention the financial support she received from Russia, in exchange for supporting the Crimea invasion.

Yep, the US has influence in France. It became bigger with Sarkozy.
And she doesn't need Russians to break away from the EU, but she needs an ally to help her dealing with consequences.

Using Russia as a way to counter balance the US influence in Europe is an old idea. In fact, De Gaulle was the first to bring it : In order for France to be independent, it needs to place itself between Russia and the US. This is what they think.

Yes I know that was De Gaulle's idea but when that was conceived the EU was still the EEC. They consider the EU as more significantthreat to France's independence than the U.S. now. The threat of globalization and open borders was not a major or relevant theme for De Gaulle, while its all over Le Pen's speeches.

Can you give me your belief on why you think these far-right nationalist governments and politicians seem so intent on making Russia an ally? I understand there is nothing inherently surprising and wrong in making Russia an ally, especially when country like the US is also allied with countries like Saudi Arabia. But why does there seem to be a consensus among these western far right politicians that being an ally of Russia is neccessary? Is it purely because they feel they will fight against "radical islamic terrorists"?

Its just very odd to me. Especially when at the same time they become antagonistic against more neutral allies.

Le Pen and all of these other far-right wing leaders in Europe want to move away from the EU. They're plain old nationalists who want to have their independence and sovereignty from that institution and the US empire for the most part.

So they use mix of left wing rhetoric, xenophobia, and nationalist fervor to gain populist footholds.

Putin is all for that. You have nationalists in complete power in Russia. The pro-Atlanticist factions were sidelined in 2014.

it's two different issues. The Eu aspect is brought up in speeches because it's more popular. However, the alliance with Russia is not just a EU thing, it's a general reconfiguration of France's position in the world.

People like LePen think that it's in the interest of France to deal with everybody and to deal with Russia and the US on the same level. France doesn't have to be more pro-US than pro Russia. If France is in the middle, between those two giants, it will have more space in the world scene.

This is also why Fillon, not a far right guy, but as someone who says he follow the steps of De Gaulle, also wants a more close relationship with Russia.
