I think my original inclination that rise of far-right has always been overstated is supported by the results. The major parties undoubtedly are in crisis, but that doesn't automatically mean it will result in widespread far right support.
Brehs keep talking about how the polls were "wrong" on Trump/Clinton to justify why they think Le Pen can win, yet they were right on the money today.

Macron will be President. The more relevant question at this point is what happens during the legislative elections, considering he has no party and the SP has taken a big defeat today.
In all honesty numerous times I tried to explain the French political context and why Le Pen never stood a chance so I'm not surprised at all by the results. The very fact that our voting system is a 2 rounder popular vote meant that Le Pen never had a chance because :
- 1. Everybody can vote as they wanted in the 1st round without too much consequences and then vote strategically in the 2nd
- 2. FN is still demonized and voting for them is still badly seen.
- 3. Every political leaders would have called to vote against FN because of point 2.

Some past elections indeed proved that Far-right was on the rise but there are specifics and different contexts in every elections and the French one can't allow a Le Pen victory yet. Also, people making the parallel with Trump may also forget that Trump lost the popular vote by a wide margin and would have lost the elections in most countries in the world if not for the electoral college system.

Regarding Macron and his lack of party, it's truly a mystery though he seems that the center will rally behind him and moderate Socialists and Conservatives may also do so. But it's truly amazing that Macron will be the president as he was never elected anywhere, has little experience and only appeal wad that he was young and brought some fresh air in the system. From a political POV, his arrival makes no sense.

Yeah I know, I've been reading a lot on democracy and alternatives these past years, I know it's far from the best system. Like I said, I fully understand the logic behind

This is more a reasoning on the Left, not voting is damn near a vote for Fillon or Le Pen. As bad or unconvincing as Hamon, Macron or Mélenchon are, at least they plan on staying within the spirit of "La République". Fillon and Le Pen are too high a risk imo not to go vote. With one of the former three, at worst you're in a "business as usual" situation. With either one of the latter two, man...I don't even want to think about it yet.
I agree. I'm just saying that we need to do something to get at this untapped base of people because they've made their point.
