French could rap, the problem is consistency and being lazy. I've seen fire features from him and ass features from him. Remember he started out battle rapping and his first mixtape is probably one of his most lyrical. Coke Wave and MC1 had pretty good rhymes too.
"Super Flexin Remix", "First Time", "OG Bobby Johnson Remix", and "Goin' Crazy" are some tough verses he's had in recent years, but it's usually like one or two songs a year where he spazzes out. I don't mind the mundane lyrics if it's a vibe and wavy, but a couple features he's been really poor like the recent Tinashe single and the PRETTYMUCH single as examples, compare that with the Stefflon Don feature which is nice.
I chalk it up to him having a drinking problem (on top of the getting shot it in the head) making for some real inconsistent output. Most importantly the horrible team he surrounds himself with who basically do nothing in advising him (His mixtape tracklists full of spelling mistakes, missing producer credit, and for years he dropped visuals from his tapes on Worldstar instead of on his own youtube page and building a sub/view count that way like that of Wiz or Meek).
