Eh It's a double edged sword. Japan is a collectivist society that doesn't encourage individualism and it's had a suffocating effect on its society.

I worked with Japanese people and they were not allowed to go home before their boss did, regardless of wheather or not they had things to do. One guy was send to Germany to learn German. He had to spend all week in classes and then do his office work on the weekends. It almost ruined his marriage because his wife had to spend all her time alone in a fukking hotel room. They even have a word for dying from working too much: Karoshi, and Hotlines for suicidal overworked employees

As I previously stated those are anecdotes that enforce a stereotype. They are not statistics, nor are they representative of Japanese society.

Keep in mind that in my response i also cited an anecdote of a japanese friend who says the exact opposite as what you claim, but i did not stop there. I also followed up my claim with national statistics from international accredited agencies and corporations that support my stance. Those statistics clearly showed that Japanese do not work longer hours than us Americans(on a weekly or yearly basis), and they also have more vacation days than us.


Do you have similar statistics and facts to support your claim?



@karim , i certainly dont doubt that your friend had it rough, but he is only a single data point. Just A lone sample size of 1person. You seem like a rational person. Surely you would weigh statistical models, which sample thousands of diverse individuals across all industries , over the circumstances of one person.

These are factually incorrect statements and horrible stereotypes. Japan is barely even in the top ten for most hours worked both weekly and even yearly. The US does more work than they do and arguably South Korea and Mexico are the most egregious global offenders. Japan is actually doing slightly more hours of work than Canada, which is typically viewed as a good work-environment country.


Those japan stereotypes were born from anecdotes, not stats.


I used to think the same until i was corrected by an actual Japanese person. They actually find this kinda offensive, similar to how Js dont like money stereotypes or we dont like crime stereotypes.

I can't speak to those stats(perhaps they don't take into account the unreported additional hours they work), but my observation when I was there fell in line with what you deemed the stereotype

Japan has crime, they just don't report it like anywhere else in the world and do things to obfuscate facts. Their justice system is also brutal and built around confessions. So they solve crimes fast because everything is set up so the cops will apply pressure non stop until someone confesses and then they call it a day. You can't rate a society based on it's media lol. Xenophobia and obsession with racial purity throughout as well.

Japan is cool to live if you’re Japanese, theeeeeeeen white. I’ve been wanting to go and teach English but I’m too old now.

There’s been lots of discussion about haifu or even fully black people living in Japan and it’s not in your face racism, more like exclusion and lack of progression, housing, etc. all subtle stuff.

My girl is Japanese and used to live there and it’s not great for women to prosper tbh. There’s lots of sexual assault, even on little girls going to school (Tokyo)

You have to visit though. It’s absolutely amazing and had one of the most surreal days of my life there. Made me think differently about life, fate and purpose

Ton of my Japanese ladies here. Moved to Canada and got citizenship here. As you're right they can't really prosper in Japan. As it's still rigidly very sexist.
