FSU's response: "While we cannot comment on any individual case, in general,
complainants control the timing in our process.”
Casher and Darby did theirs this past summer. Amazing how this all of a sudden comes up after the 1st week of College football.
New statement from the attorneys for Jameis Winston's accuser: #FSU
We are sorry that Mr. Winston’s NFL lawyer sees this campus rape investigation as a trespass on some sacred turf, but the era of silencing student victims of sexual assault by mocking and harassing them is over. What he doesn't seem to understand is that Title IX is a law, not a publicity stunt. As anyone who works in campus rape knows, the victims do not want the publicity. They want justice. They want accountability. And more than anything they want their old life back. One day a young woman is pursuing her education, the next she finds herself being attacked by her own school, their athletic department, and lawyers like Mr. Winston’s who all view the law and the protection of women on campus as nothing more than hurdles in the path to athletic glory.
When a victim comes forward in the face of such powerful forces such as FSU football and NFL lawyers like Mr. Cornwell, it is an act of tremendous courage. Especially when student athletes have committed the rape, the victim can unfortunately expect the sort of harassment we are hearing now. But this is not a Tallahassee tailgate party. The days of protecting big time school athletics and professional sports at the expense of women’s education and safety are drawing to a close. Title IX isn’t going away and the tide is finally rolling towards actual compliance and protection of women. Campus rape is a national problem, and our client is going to be part of the solution.
