The threepeat strategy was to funnel offensive players into shaq. Kobe was very good at doing that because it highlighted his bad habits of letting players go around him without much resistance other than a quick attempt to reach around and knock the ball away as they were going by. Team defense is just something he never cared about. When he did go up against a good player he felt motivated to stop, he would just focus on stopping that guy from scoring even if his overplay resulted in easier baskets for others.
