Defense has always been an extremely overrated part of his game.

Putting him on the all defensive teams back in 2001 or whatever is one thing. He gambled a ton and Shaq had to clean up a lot of mistakes but at least he really was guarding people back then. Once Shaq left, he was relieved of all defensive duties so he could save his energy for scoring. Phil would literally look and see who the worst player on the other team was and he'd put Kobe on him. That's not an exaggeration.

To give him defensive awards in that setup is like giving offensive awards to Tony Allen or Shane Battier.

Shaq was a solid defender? I don't remember Shaq being a great rim protector in that era....

Kobe would guard the Steve Nash types while other role players defended the opposing teams star players. Metta World Peace, Trevor A3za, etc. He also always had the best bigs in the game to help on defense. Without that, Kobe's D is average, his offense is average too since he missed the playoffs once he didn't have that. Imagine a Lebron lead team missing the playoffs.
