This album emphasized exactly what Gang Starr was about. Consistency, quality, and purity. Premier had an almost impossible task of trying to take old verses and bring them to life, while making a Gang Starr album that sounded like it could fit in 2019. He succeeded at both. :mjcry:

Guess I'm the first person to mention this, but Guru was still killing it. He's been dead for nine years and he could still outrap half the industry. :blessed:

All the references to classic Gang Starr songs. :blessed:

The guest appearances. :blessed:

People in this thread complaining about an album we were never supposed to get. :mjlol:

I was able to experience the release of a Gang Starr album for the first time, and it was everything I could want from the group. Some songs are obviously short because of the material Premier had to work with, but if you know the story, that shouldn't be a problem. Plus, in this day and age, leaner albums are the trend. This is definitely going in rotation for the rest of the year. :blessed:

EDIT: That was Guru on the "Lights Out" hook?! What happened to the king of monotone?! :damn:

Not mad at this album at all. Not sure what the process was of putting this together but with the exception of maybe 2-3 joints, everything sounds in place here. Copped

I'm surprised anybody thinks it sounds like original tracks. It definitely sounds like Premo pieced it together like a jigsaw puzzle, maybe it's only obvious to people who produce. You can tell from what sounds like reused or previously discarded hooks, changes in vocal quality and tone, Gurus verses sounding unfinished or demo quality in places.

Plus with the mixed quality of the beats it feels like a weak entry for Gang Starr.

Theres a few good songs, no way is it better than The Ownerz which has actual fully formed songs and consistent production.

This, album is alright but I understand preem probably had little to work with

I listened to his Hot 97 interview this morning. He said a few joints were obviously in good condition and easy for him to build beats and songs around. He said others were random verses but not full song concepts yet, so on those he had to figure out the best ideas for hooks, and whether or not to make it a shorter song or use a feature to flesh it out.

He also said most of the verses were from 2005/2006 and that none of the verses were that dated in terms of references. He said the “...if Big and Pac we’re still here...” line for example on Bad Name is something Guru would’ve still likely said even now.

The whole interview is a good listen.

They ask him about Group Home and he says what I’ve always suspected. That he’s way more interested in how people sound. The voice as a musical instrument—-way more than whether or not someone has bars on top of bars. He also has some cool stories about RZA, Biggie, Jeru, and lifting weights with Suge
