Maybe KD came clean w the team and told them he aint coming back so now he feels obligated to at least try to help them one more time?

I don't think he's giving them mixed signals. After game 3, ABC/ESPN had a shot of the ice and cast on his calf...it looked BAD. I just don't think he can come back. Maybe if they force it to game 7 he could play in that one...but outside of that I'm gonna assume he's gone.
