electrical engineering

:mindblown:

Son.
You have a electrical engineering degree.

But you would rather produce music.

You will make more being an engineer. Do music as a part time IF you have time, get on with an engineering firm and get that sack!

It's fear, and if you have stability a lot of people can't understand why you would go out on a limb and risk anything or "waste time" if you already make good money.

My brother is supportive of all my stuff. My mom and dad see my talent but both for different reason's wouldn't ever tell me to pursue something that wasn't stable or considered the norm. But when I do something, when it's already in motion they support me. You just have to do you and not look for support. It comes and goes. People project their fears and doubt onto you. You have to keep going for your dream regardless everyone doesn't see what you see, so you can't expect them to believe in you like you believe in yourself or even understand. Family or not.

People mean well and may call it protecting you but it can really hurt. As cliche' as it sounds it is better to try and fail than to not try and wonder.

People always excusing parents for doing sorry ass stuff. I'm not going to speak on who's right or wrong but there's no need for a parent to straight up tell their child they're never going to achieve something.

Unfortunately this is the type of stuff some people have to go through when taking a risk to do big things in life :francis:

Above the fray.
OP

with all due respect, this story doesn't add up. Studied and graduated in one of the most demanding majors and now want to score films?

Do you play instruments, did you minor in fine arts or even take those kinds of classes?

Are you a musical or artistic person? Or do you see the potential money and figure that you have as much of a shot as anybody else?

I'm saying this because there was a thread here last week about a guy in Com.College who wanted to transfer to Morehouse...guy posted his story ...and never responded to advice...which leads me to believe that he was talking out of his ass. Are you speaking from your butt too?

Then score them motherfukkers and quit worrying about what other people think, family included.

You is kind, you is smart, you is important. fukk them! As long as you’re being responsible within the pursuit of your dreams, let them haters sit back and watch you work.

I dont know about totally shytting on dreams, but sometimes you need a dose of reality. Music should never be your primary focus unless you're astronomically gifted. Get a fulltime job and produce during your free time. Moms probably thinks youre gonna be one of those eternal leeches that grow up in the hood(I know plenty)

Well, your parents were looking out for your best interest (the best way they knew how) by steering you toward a STEM field. You obviously have the aptitude for it to have completed your bachelor's in EE.

The late Bernie Mac once said "Life ain't a dress rehearsal". This is the one life you have, be realistic about your situation at all times, but by all means follow your passion.

Grind,

I reread your first post and I think you misinterpreted what your family said to you. Despite what you thought you heard, your family is not saying they don't believe in YOU . It's the art/music world that they don't trust.

If they tried to discourage you from a field that is a meritocracy, that would be saying/implying that they don't believe in YOU....your ability to compete and succeed.

In the arts, your intelligence, skills, creativity, drive don't translate into success as easily as in other fields. That's what the "you'll never make it" comments or implication is about.

If I made it after being told that by my own parents, I wouldn't give them shyt. My biggest pet peeve is when someone tries to crush another person's dreams and it hurts even more when it comes from your family. You may have reservations about the person's dreams but it's no excuse to kill someone's pursuit of happiness.
