Google is Apparently Letting Verizon Handle Major Pixel System Updates | Droid Life

:snoop:

this is bad....do not get this phone from verizon if you expecting timely updates....had the galaxy nexus years ago......smh

Terrible decision (if it was Google's call). No reason to get carriers involved the most critical part of the update process. It's been shown time and time again that third parties (manufacturers and carriers) only make the process much worse (slower and unpredictable). Apple went through that so you could walk thru that door Google.
Heard it was....this all rumors tho....I believe the shyt

Got to applauded apple for having that updating software shyt on lock man

The solution to this is to buy the unlocked version off the Google Play store. It still works on Verizon network but updates come straight from Google.

Nobody is disputing that point, ( @head shots101 original post pointed that out) but that really isn't a solution for the bigger problem.

Google should have a tighter grip over this happening regardless of where you buy it as the average consumer (that isn't a techie) will probably buy it from wherever they see it first. Now that Google is controlling the phone from top to bottom, this should not be the case.

Verizon gonna have a say since their version includes WiFi calling. Just the way it is.

What's the deal with Verizon's wifi calling preventing Pixel updates, but not preventing mass iPhone updates thru Apple? Verizon (and other carriers) have to sign off on Apple updates, but Apple is still responsible for the update process. That's all I would expect from Google here.

Apple being the hardware manufacturer for 1. This is really the first time Google is responsible for the hardware and software design on a phone.
Apple also had leverage on Verizon since they came out as ATT exclusive. Verizon probably had to give that up to get iPhones on their network.

I dont have Verizon and will probably never get it, so I just SMH at anyone that gets a Verizon branded Android phone then complains about delayed updates.

Google is pretty much assuming the hardware manufacturer role here though by controlling the entire device build process. There's not really much different from what Apple does and what Google is doing aside from the iPhone stronghold like you said.

I'm generally in the same boat as you regarding Verizon, but at a higher level this still plays into the typical fragmentation/inconsistency arguments that are always thrown around.

I'm a Verizon customer but purchase all my devices through the play store :manny:
Yep. That's easily the best way to go. I buy my iPhones straight from the Apple store too. It's just crazy that you could have a different experience with the *same* device depending on where you buy it.

What do you mean breh?
Isn't it exclusively on Verizon unless you buy it from the play store? Most people not going to spend that money up front for a phone. Majority of people would rather cop on a payment plan.

Microsoft did the same thing with the 980... I wanted to cop too. It's almost like they wanted that joint to fail. Made no sense since that was the phone that was supposed to resurrect win phone 10
