You work for Google?

I work for a major cell phone carrier and know a guy who gets to hands on phones before they come out, he gets every device sent to him months in advance and I get to play around with the phones when I see him every two weeks

Nice.

What was your hands on impression of the device? How does it stack up next to the Note/iPhone?

The feel of it was awesome. The swipe up from the bottom for the app draw was smooth. No choppiness. The two tone back is kind of odd. Physically it looks a lot like an iPhone in terms of shape and feel in the hand. The launcher is pretty nice.

Side by side with the Note 7 Camera is wasn't even a contest, the note looked much better. Was looking from a window outside, but the colors and lighting looked much better on the note. Interesting to see if something has changed from the version I saw, because all these places are praising the camera and I wouldn't do the same after having the two next to each other.

How smooth is it? I know even the Note 7 still has occasional lagging from time to time but does the Pixel have smooth scrolling just like the iPhone.

Not exactly the most rigorous testing, but I didn't see much if any lag at all. Using a note 7 daily you experience a few blips for sure, but you do with any phone, iPhone included.

Now that replacement notes are burning up again I might have to get a pixel, I just want to make sure the camera is upgraded first.

The Pixel itself is not the problem. The problem is Android users are mad cause they expected the Pixel to offer the same subsidized prices as Nexus. Not selling for iPhone/Galaxy level prices.
The Nexus 6P and 5X weren't subsidized initially though. Yes, they did eventually become available from all carriers but the unlocked Google Play version consistently sold out for the first few months and they were priced similarly because I paid $750 for my 64GB 6P.

I wasn't sold on the back because I'm a fan of uniformity. I think an all matte version would have looked much better.

The one thing I really liked was how fluid the OS looks. I'm still not a fan of the design philosophy and all the random colors but I can tell they put in major work trying to get it smooth.

They slowly increased the price every year (or every other year) with the Nexus series. It was just surprising for most like @TZiggy said though it shouldn't have been.

That's true but they also increased the build quality with those prices...I mean that's what the community asked for. We wanted higher quality material builds like the Samsung devices and iPhones - which justifies the price hike.
