The GDP is a questionalbe metric to be basing your economic decisions on.
That said the world wants a great deal of of what the US produces and the US wants a great deal of the services that the US produces.
The notion that only being self sufficent has been disproven by reality.
Specialization of labor helps everyone get rich. The US went from a largely manufacturing and agricultural country to a service based country and even with inflation, due to the ability to trade internationally the cost of living in real dollars declined, quality of living increased,.
The petro dollar and the US being willing to destroy nations who even threaten to leave the US dollar helps with the US's inflationary practices, but those practices don't help the US citizen at all, hence people complaining about how little the dollars gets them and shrinkflation and all the other economic indicators.

We have to return to an actual fiscally responsible economically disciplined nation, we have to pay off our debts and and run balanced or surplus budgets, and stop the rampent inflation if you want to be economically secure in the future, not restrict free trade.

I don't deny that having the dollar as a reserve currency is good, but the world's dependence on us is far far far far greater than that primarily due to tech. i think we shifted away from physical production to digital and electronic. Such items are just as valuable as traditional physical production because the world basically collapses without America.

Different states will have different policies.I
If you don't like the way a state administers, you can vote with your feet to go to another state.
Just like every other state run social program.

What's the TSP? But the rest I agree with. And the max income for SS tax is far too low. Raising that alone would make SS solvent well past 2060.
