cheap right now. I wouldn't put down more than like 3-4K on a ~10K car personally.

I put it like this man. I got my Civic for 11K, put 3K down. My note is like 150 for 5 years I think. I pay extra to get the note done faster. Only 2.5%. At least look into it... check your credit and go from there.
then that 6 racks is a down payment you should be able to get something decent with 6k if you do that 5 year loan payment plan. Just look around at car dealerships its a bunch of options but don't let them game you tho. Look for something in 30k-40k your payments should be 400-500 a month since you put so much down and the interest rate would be lower with that amount of down payment

Ignore all the posters that said to put your cash toward a down payment. You're in college still, you should be staking bread - not going in debt. Get a reliable older model car. You can find plenty at the 6k range. Expect higher mileage on the vehicles, just have them checked by a reputable mechanic first.
Go for something like this, buy off a independent seller - not a dealer.
Just look online in your area. Dont think so much about a specific car - just type in what your willing to pay and scroll through post. That will give you an idea of what you can afford and still look cool in

6k wont get you much in the late model world..Unless you go to an auction if you want to impress whores on a budget look for a classic....like this european classic is being listed for 5,500...
or you could go with american classic
Point is you get something that stands out on your campus that nobody else will have...give you a chance against the rich kids with the benzes and ranges
just something to consider...PS take a good mechanic with you to inspect cos these cars dont have a check engine light,no error codes so you dont end up with a money pit.
Most of them girls don't even got a car. As long you a got a decent lookin whip with AC that's a come up for them 
Put that 6k down on a 2010 Impala.. Your payments can be like $150 for five years then you good money

2005-2006 Acura TL would be perfect for you and reliable. Just get the transmission looked at, they tend to go out near the 150k mark.
Terrible advice for a college student. Did you forget to factor in gas & insurance in the monthly budget?
Just get a Honda Civic, install polyurethane motor mounts, the whole car is going to vibrate with the engine. It's quite annoying though.
