How many years have I been saying had that Orlando magic team stayed together, they would have been a dynasty? The 90s are full of good teams that didn't stay together long enough to become great.

:patrice: name the others breh? none come to mind

and no one was beating the bulls anyway :manny:

great article though i read it on thursday

It's funny reading this stuff as an adult and getting to hear more about the players' real personality. It strips a lot of the nostalgia and mythology surrounding the players away. Being born and raised in Orlando, I wanted to be Penny growing up :wow:. I'm not saying I wanted to be like him. I wanted to be him on some talented Mr. Ripley shyt. Everybody loved Penny. I can see how the adoration for his game led people to cover his cantankerous and moody ways up. I also can see how the Penny love affair bothered Shaq too.

A few random musings:

* I mainly remember Anthony Bowie for constructing a triple double against the Pistons.

* What somebody said about how it seemed like the Rockets never missed is spot the fukk on. I hated Sam Cassell and Kenny Smith for a long time. Those fukkers made seemingly everything.

* I think we would've beaten the Rockets too if we'd won the first game. Nick Anderson devastated everyone. I was in 5th grade and already taking L's. :mjcry:

* I wish DeVos would sell the team. I've never really felt like he knew what he was doing. From all reports, he's a great man, but I feel like owning the team is a conversation piece or something for him. It's something to do in his leisure. Dude let John Weisbrod (a hockey guy) become GM. Re-hired Brian Hill and shyt like that. I'm starting to lose faith in Hennigan too.

* I don't think anyone really thought Shaq would leave. When he did, the city was crushed. People walked around in a fog like zombies. What they said about a state of mourning occurring was no lie. It was like realizing you're in a post-apocalyptic society and things are never going to be the way they were again. I still hate the Lakers to this day. :wow:

* It's good to see Brooks Thompson is still alive. :leon:

i think we loved penny's game and chris rock's voice.. thinking back i can't ever recall hearing the man talk until his recent BS report :heh:

it was genius on nike's part marketing wise for someone that didn't have much personality

I'm about to dive into this article and read it now, but I remember listening to a Horace Grant interview recently about Shaq leaving Orlando. He said that Shaq called him that offseason, but he missed the call & Shaq signed with the Lakers soon after. He said he believes that if he answered that call, Shaq would've stayed in Orlando :mjcry:

Let's not forget about when the Magic signed T-Mac, Grant Hill and were on the verge of signing Tim Duncan until David Robinson talked him into staying in San Antonio. :mjcry:

It's so hard being a Magic fan, but I think I'd be the most satisfied seeing them win a ring at this point than any other team I root for :mjcry:

I always thought the notion that Penny being a coach killer was some generic 90s CaC writer bullshyt.

It even says right there in the article, it was a collective team decision. They all had that meeting in the hotel in Minnesota to decide and it was unanimous they wanted a new direction. You mean to tell me a team with veterans like Wilkins, Grant and Schayes was gonna go along with it cause Penny said so? No they all wanted Hill gone. Brian Hill was a little bit stuck in his ways. I remember he used to cuss out the players for minor shyt and stick to rules that he would get walked over (Shaq arriving late after his grandmom's funeral to play the Bulls in 1996).

Penny's thing with Daly was silly too, Chuck at that point was pretty bitter he had been dealt an injury plagued team. Didnt even get to coach Penny the first year and in the second year coming off injury he made Penny play the point but superseded his minutes to Darrell Armstrong off the bench. Daly just got pissed Penny wasnt aggressive and made it out like he was a nightmare to deal with. I love Daddy Rich but he really thought because he dealt with Rodman he could deal with all and its just different.

Also that thing with him and Urkel has been the longest ducktales. Cause both dudes came across soft and sensitive and were friends in Orlando they assumed they were fukking. It was Dr Dre is gay levels of reaching.

As for if they woudl be a championship team eventually....maybe. But they needed to build a proper bench, probably eventually trade 3D (which Shaq would not let) for a legit 3. Also they werent winning with Hill. Now if Daly is there while Shaq is and Penny doesnt get in the knee by Dumars (which I think wasnt the main thing, those knees were ready to get wrecked by anything, so I will say if he doesnt rush back from knee surgery) then maybe they get the title. But it depends on people would have had the patience of 2 seasons where Shaq and Penny are injured for extended period (95-96, 96-97)

Also Shaq was leaving the Lakers no matter what. He didnt want Penny to have the spotlight yes, but ultimately he saw they weren't getting out of the east with MJ there and he was still into his philanthropy with the music and rapping and went to LA. He thought he would have Eddie Jones and Nick Van Exel not expecting Kobe to be the player he was.

The Orlando Sentinel ran a contest for fans to help pick the name of the team. The finalists included the Heat, Juice, Tropics, and Magic. By chance, Williams’s young daughter had visited the city and later described it as “Magic.” The team’s name became a no-brainer after that.

:mjlol::francis::what::snoop::scust:

Just imagine one of those names today in the league:huhldup:

Penny talked plenty...
Lil Penny was part of it, but Penny himself was a likable and chill seemingly not douchebag dude. Kyrie Irving reminds me of him
