Quite a few of those 70s and 80s acts were still active and still putting out new material and touring in the 90s.

You also had the rise of rap/hip hop.

I see everyone is saying the 70s, and it definitely was tough, but every genre was hitting in the 90s and hip-hop ain't exist in the 70s. I can't discount those facts.
