I see everyone is saying the 70s, and it definitely was tough, but every genre was hitting in the 90s and hip-hop ain't exist in the 70s. I can't discount those facts.
Hip hop most definitely did exist in the 70s . Thats when it was born. I get yall are probably talking about a widespread mainstream level but it still existed in the 70s and doesn't become what it did without the 70s. 70s still stands as the most influential decade on hip hop to this day as well.

I know. But the 90s it's in its prime. In the 70s it was raw, people didn't quite know what it was yet. Similarly rock was out in the 40s, but it took 20-30 years for it fo hit it's prime.
