Love Child, The Supremes.

This song is so heavy. I've never heard a song that covers the topics The Supremes covered in this song. The music is psychedelic and funky. and orchestration. The harmonies The Supreme hit are some of their best IMO. Horn section is good, but they use what sounds like a xylophone, harmonies, drums, and a violin to drive the song. It's fire. There's noise everywhere.

Also the album Love Child is fukking fire. It doesn't have any of their very popular hits, but artistically I think it's their best work. They showed they're more than pop artists, they're artists. There are multiple what I'd call unique songs on that album. They went on a 29 album run! Most modern artists are lucky to have 3 albums. And one is always trash. They had 29 fukking albums.

Does Your Momma Know About Me, The Supremes.

People love Marvin. But people rarely notice this:

He went from poppy duets, like Ain't No Mountain High Enough. That's not a diss. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. And his harmonies with Tammy Terrell may be the GOAT. fukk you if you disagree. They harmonized so well they sounded like one voice. Also I'm sure they were in love.

Marvin Gaye flipped it on em' and started making cuts like What's Going On?

Nobody asks why. Just know you're grooving to that man's pain. He suffered multiple personal tragedies that changed him. That's why his music changed. He wasn't just responding to the world changing. He realized universal truths. Love is the answer. And to change we have to discuss these things.

Tower Of Power, There's Only So Much Oil In The Ground. This song should be the official song for the green movement. It's a classic TOP cut.

@Jayne this joint reminds me of you. Not the lyrics. Just the groove. It's real steady, deep, and kind of ambient at times.

Time Will Tell, TOP.

Another fire classic. TOP is slept on heavy. If they repped SF or Berkeley they would be adored more. But since they're loyal to Oakland they get ignored by some. I admire these guys because they were socially conscious, cool, afroncentric, anti gentrification, and still did drugs. They really proved you good people in all sorts of packages.

They'd make a song about drunk driving and doing blow then drop something real positive.

Down To The Night Club, TOP

My fav, definitely.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Lonely Boy

Don't you ever sleep on the Goddesses known as The Vandellas. Low key they were top three best Motown acts of all time. Heat Wave has classic after classic on it. I can't think of any act other than Stevie that released an album that had classic after classic on it.

Vocally Martha was amazing. Listen to how little her voice was engineered. When I listen to her records I feel like I'm in the room with her. I can hear her strong voice filling the room and echoing off the walls.

Their songs were so good male groups would cover their songs and change the lyrics. If Martha were better looking she'd get the credit she fukking deserves as a legend.

I'm not sure how to describe this song.

Leon Bridges, Pull Away.

This song is like a modern Sam Cooke song. Coming Home is a great album. I listen to it everyday. I know all the words. Got me through every nasty breakup I've ever been through.

I've cried to this record. Laughed to it. Smiled. His music is easy to listen to. It's smooth and direct. fukk a metaphor.

Leon Bridges, River

This song reminds me of Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.

Both songs have saved my life. I've been to a lot dark places in my life. I don't have friends, family, and nobody loves me. My life is an uphill climb. Everyday I have to convince myself I am valuable.

It gets harder everyday. But with music like this in my heart I've never been alone. I've been writing songs since I could write. I was published multiple times before fifth grade.

I write everyday. I think I'd explode if I didn't. If I could sing I'd be pursuing it right now. I tried writing for other people. It was fun but hearing someone perform my music made my stomach turn.

Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers, Jesus Gave Her water.

Sam Cooke is like McCartney and Lennon combined. Great voice, simple direct songs. This might be my favorite Sam Cooke song.

The harmonies are fire, they use voices to make the melody. The human voice is the best instrument. Black churches are slept on. I go to church for the music.

Sam Cooke, Change Gonna Come

"Its been too hard living but I'm afraid to die."

I think Cooke is the godfather of soul. Soul music to me is black emo music. It's how we really feel about the world. TBH if you're black there aren't many reasons to be happy.

Cooke reminds me of myself a lot. Clean cut. Polite. Almost square. His music was very emotional. Even his happy songs were kind of sad. We both really want to be loved and we want to love someone. Our lives are oddly similar. I ain't trying to go out like him. I really might though.

Real talk. I've had plenty of people cut on me thinking it was the move. I always end up stunting on them years later. Loyalty above love.

What makes TOP special is their commitment live instruments. They sound better live than they do on wax. Look how big their band is? I can hear every section clearly.

Whoever is mixing this shyt live is a god, imagine trying to tune all the mics to pick up sound properly without muddying them.
