A fleeting childhood
Bro my mother is a dougla my uncles and aunts are douglas,and I have nuff family in GT.Never in GT have I been called a dougla when I was there.

And the fact that you say Dougla has negative connotations pretty much shows you have no idea of what it means.

A dougla is some one who is half black and half Indian period,the children of douglas have to have both dougla parents to considred be one.

and the thing is if you come out black looking in GT you are not even considred a real dougla ,
:hubie: I've heard it be used in a similar way to mixed breed & mutt.

What is your father? And where were you born? I ask this because it kinda seems you gotta be in the carribbean to even for that term to apply

An example... my girl is AA but our kids I wouldn't consider Dougla since we are here in America. So even if we went to visit, it would still be different

Nah brah just asked my aunt who spent 40 years in Guyana..

Mother = African
Father = Indian

Have a child.

That child is Dougla( Not a fan of using that word because it's always had negative connotations in my personal experience but the sake of clarity..)

From there.. that Dougla child can have a child with someone who is Indian OR African descent and the resulting child will still be considered Dougla.

So now the resulting child is less of one thing but it takes the one parent to be completely African or Indian followed by the child's spouse to be of the same descent (let's say African in this hypothetical situation) for the resulting child not to be considered Dougla.

3 generations i guess is an easier way to understand it

Is it like the use of "mulatto" in french guiana for any Afro-Guianese who's not haitian or a maroon, with the understanding that pretty much every Afro-descendant guianese has SOME european ancestry, thus no need for an actual "afro" or "black" guianese category, even if a large number of guianese 'mulattos' may look phenotypically similar to your average black afro-descendant in the americas?

My father is GT too,dougla simply means a mixed person of African and Indian descent in Guyana... and no it doesnt matter if you were born in America or not. Again it doesn't have any negative connotations to it , a dougla will tell you thats what they are a dougla, no matter if the original meaning of the word was something bad...

Just like the term buffiano (someone who is of mixed Amerindian and Black) ancestry in Guyana, its base meaning was intended for something else now it has a completely different meaning.

I thought dougla was similar to what Jamaicans call coolie? It’s not the most positive term

It's so sad because Guyanese women are gorgeous and have pleasant personalities...the ones I've met at least. I've never been buy my grandmother went with one of her friends 4 years ago and stayed. She said they go to bed weirdly early at like 9 the latest. Everyone is sleep. Very strict.
