It make sense

The movie came out in November 1998

So they probably shot the movie in early 1998
I don’t know when they shot the movie, but I do know this interview was from 1997 way before his album debuted.

That's crazy if X debut album didnt sell the movie Belly never would have seen the light of day
Yep. Entertainment industry understands dollars, and if it makes dollars it makes sense.

Def Jam was notorious in that era for spending promo money to buy albums to boost first week sales. But X turned out to be the real deal as his later chart success would prove. People really connected with his music.

And of course, Def Jam put out the soundtrack

peaked at number 5 on Billboard

D's music spoke for itself, but the Def Jam machine worked out very well that year. They blew him up and cashed in on the soundtrack when the film was completed.

Bring ass to get ass.

Uptown, Downtown, Switzerland
Jay as Tommy and Nas as Rico/Alpo would've been two of the worst casting choices ever.
would've took two intriguing charismatic characters and turned them into mumbling, stuttering, idiots.

Jay was pretty fantastic in his State Property cameo though.

ehhh it ain’t like it was a 100 mill dollar movie. It was pretty low budget in the grand scheme of things and x was the hottest thing in hip hop.
It was actually a big budget. 50 million to be exact. It was considered a very big risk. That’s why Hype never got a follow up.
