True.

if it wasn't for Jay-Z and Mos Def's cosigns, Kanye would haven't been taken seriously.

if it wasn't for Dre, Em wouldn't have been taken seriously.

if it wasn't for Dre, Kendrick would have no career.

if it wasn't for Jay-Z, J Cole would have no career.

A lot of post-2000s garbage rappers came in through cosigns. That's what y'all love.

Cole had one of the biggest pushes of all time

Featured on a Beyoncé song

Was featured on Melanie Fiona, Keri Hilson and Elle Verner albums to try and grab a female fanbase before he was even hot
:francis:

Won't work out already poppin or at least bubbling when Party dropped like I said Cole ain't get a push from roc nation til after he showed he could make a radio hit

Come up , warm up and Friday night lights was all on his own

Article sponsored by Roc Nation? Y'all some gullible ass nikkas if you can't detect the dikklicking.

I love how the writer mentions that Roc Nation was a pop label from jump (which is true), but somehow, J Cole, its first artist, is 'hip hop through and through' :laff: CMON. How stupid do you think we are? :snoop:

And all this "Cole made it on his own shyt"... knock it off. Y'all stay being insecure about that. Cole's push has been insane since day one. Between him and Duckie, it's hard to say who got the biggest push of the last 5-10 years.

It's more like if you can't get anyone to listen to you or agree with you or take you seriously.... Start shytting on drake and at least you'll get the support of a few basement dwellers.

@hex and @10bands50bands100bandsQM

Made a complete posting career of it. Nobody knows them for anything else.

Breh, try and erase the idea you have of Drake for a second and listen to those records

Nothing about either record said "pop act" when they came out

They were both very good to great mainstream hip hop records

Records that would've been hits by damn near any artist, regardless of their affiliations

They were that good

That's why Drake caught on

He never needed Wayne, Baby, or Young Money

I personally thought he was an idiot for signing a deal

I prayed he would be the first artist to say fukk the industry, cake off his own talent,

and inspire the next wave of super talented artists to do the same

I agree with you but

a) both records are urban pop. Suitable urban pop (and Best I Ever Had is a banger), but urban pop nonetheless. No head was listening to Drizzy's shyt like "yooo! real hip hop is back!"

b) he was already signed by then. You simply cannot get that level of radio spin and record-pushing by yourself.

I don't know what urban pop is breh

They were mainstream hip hop records

The same type of radio singles hip hop artists have made forever

Facts Only...

Moreso just Wayne and also the timing was when Lil Wayne was at his absolute peak as a artist....

The 1st time I heard Drake was on Ransom with Lil Wayne.

No way Drake would be where he is now without that Cash money cosign and having Wayne heavily featured on his early popular projects

cmon breh. You're a man of a certain age. You know what urban music is. It's Black pop for the most part.

What is the definition of urban music?

Musical genre of the 1980s and '90s defined by recordings by rhythm-and-blues or soul artists with broad crossover appeal. Urban contemporary began as an American radio format designed to appeal to advertisers who felt that “black radio” would not reach a wide enough audience.

Made forever? nah. Mainstream hip hop in 2006 meant something totally different in 1996 as it did in 1986.

Drake's in the same vein as Chris Brown and them nikkas, in terms of that broad crossover appeal shyt. Even to this day. Hip hop-supported RnB pop. That's Drizzy's lane from jump.
