If you're not in NYC/LA/Bay Area, 27k(assuming you have little to no debt) is pretty decent.
For example if I wanted to rent an apartment outside of those metro areas listed above, I'd likely be paying $800 or less for a decent 1br or $200k for a decent house.

I'm serious. 8 people work part time at McDonalds raking 80k total, and two people are salaried at Exxon Mobil making 60k a year. You now have spread 200k out over 10 people and you have a bad average at 20k/person.

this 80/20 split you created i assume is supposed to represent of all chicago. if you are saying that 80% the people in chicago bring in 10k, then you should explicitly state this before you bump the number up by including the 20% who make a lot to that group. this is disingenuous work on your part. if your goal was accuracy, thats a huge detail to omit and just leave to the imagination. i think you know that though. thats why you went for the low figure in the 20% because you could have included the millionares of chicago, however few, to bump that number up even more. which would look ridiculous if you actually did try to do that. which is why you didnt.
