Can any one describe the feeling on Sohh or any other hip hop forums when this dropped?:lupe:
Epic moment

different times back then. Songs took months to come out not weeks or days. Takeover had been bubbling since before or after summer jam. Nas had responded with Stillmatic freestyle but back then a lot of people never heard it for whatever reason. It wasn't out there like that so the atmosphere was still like people patiently waiting for Nas to say something for MONTHS.

I'm expecting like bars from the message or that type of Nas and we get the ultra disrespectful and hilarious ether. Shocking on all counts. The approach, the music sort of being garbage but even then it didn't stop the song from doing what it did as a diss. Nothing about it was predictable. Nas was vulgar, animated, spiteful and hilarious.

I know so many dudes old and young from this era who still walk around quoting ether to this day dying of laughter. it left an impression for sure. Nas had been counted out and left for dead, I couldn't say I saw it coming even as a huge fan back then

Bro I'm one of the few that admitted that Jay was over Hov when it came out, that's how almost everyone was feeling and me and my homie were huge Nas fans. Like dude said in his KD2 review that time before Ether came out was the worst time to be a Nas fan, because his last album was Nastradamus and Jay hit him with a solid body blow with Takeover...but then Ether came out

Another question, was this the first time Stan was used as an actual pejorative?

Stan was used after the Em song against Canibus as people speculated who the song was about was actually hi... but that beef was such a nerdy hip hop moment that it doesn't really factor. Nas made it what it became publicly to the masses.

This my last Ether Day, Gentlemen. Twenty years we kept the classic alive but I think its place is cemented. They tried to count Nas out then he punched Gawd (Hova) in the face. They really tried to send him to hell for snuffing Jesus. Salute. Happy Ether Day, y’all.
