I feel like that was mostly out of their hands tho. The Houston scene blew up at the wrong time IMO cuz as soon as they did, the ATL scene was already gaining a ton of momentum and pretty much overshadowed damn near all other regions of the South. Houstons movement simply wasn't big enough to compete and along with that, they weren't unified enough cuz there was a lot of inner conflict going on amongst the big dogs there.
I understand the h town movement in like 04/05 ish wit mike jones, flip, trae, zro, chamillonaire, paul wall, slim thug. But what about Maxo cream , the sauce twins and meg the stallion ? Technically I guess travis scott is from houston too . Seems like htown got something

Many guys went from super popular and hype and selling a ton to a smaller-scale career: Ja, P, Face, Puff, X, Cube, TI, Jeezy, 50 and so on

But Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer went from worldwide megastars to nobodies within 2 years or so
I feel like these are better examples of what op talking about

Puff Daddy as an artist. He ran 1997 and much of 1998, and quickly became public enemy #1. He even made a single out of it. He went from being everywhere to being the most hated entity in Hip Hop. He had a platinum album in 1999, but this is dude that was previously 7X platinum with chart topping hit after chart topping hit.

Ehhh 1997’s No Way Out was on the strength of Biggies death and I’ll be Missing you..

Once that faded, the Bad Boy effect faded

Yeah, I remember that whole thing on Twitter. The way she was talking to Q-Tip who was just trying to educate her.

Macklemore definitely put himself in the background. The Grammy situation ensured that hip hop would never accept him, even though he was aware of his white privilege and knew that Kendrick deserved Best Rap Album.
This was also at the peak of the hypebeast/tumblr era where a lot of white people felt comfortable acting like they were black. from being ridiculed in the early 00s they could finally act out without coming off as corny. Iggy is the perfect example.

then the Grammys happened, the protests and iggy couldn’t shut the fukk up and they fell back.

And people mentioning fetty wap like he was ever anything more than a one hit wonder

It wasn't just No Way Out. Puff was everywhere. He was on Mariah's "Honey" remix, Brian McKnight "You Should Be Mine". They went to Puff to assist in creating the "Candle In The Wind" tribute to Princess Diana.

"Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" dropped nearly a month before Biggie died and was huge before he died. That song started that whole run.

Yeah I mean Hammer (for around 3 years altogether) and Vanilla Ice (maybe not even two years?) hit some incredible highs in regard to popularity and sales, the fall-offs were spectacular and people literally laughed at them for being yesterday's trend/hype and no one bought their shyt anymore

Fetty WAP had 4 major singles in the span of a year. He’s the perfect person for this thread. He went from massive radio play and Taylor Swift bringing him on stage with her to perform a song that 60K fans in the stadium were all singing to....literally nothing. He was literally finished and discarded after one year. That is insane.

Chingy

His debut had massive hits like "Right Thurr", "Holiday Inn", "One Call Away" and he surprised everybody with his verse on Luda's album. Breh dropped his sophomore album a little more than a year later and nothing was ever the same. He got clowned for the album cover and it was laughable to even mention him and Nelly in the same sentence. They were being compared when Chingy first hit the scene with "Right Thurr", but Chingy was gone and forgotten by album 2.

He resurfaced two years later with "Pullin Me Back", which was a hit and another minor hit in "Dem Jeans", but disappeared again shortly thereafter.

I can back up Wayne's success with actual tangible proof though. :mjlol:

He still goes gold and platinum, still featured on all the hottest artists albums, streams are still high AF, still breaks billboard records, still holds all the billboard records (only person on his level/above him is Drake):ohhh:

The same can't be said for Nasir Jones :yeshrug:

But then again...it seems that Nas isn't invested into the music as much as Wayne. Wayne loves making music :yeshrug:

But are we talking about musical relevancy? I guess it depends on the criteria.

Wayne's run was over by 2013 lol.

The Carter V was trash, it had 1 good song. In 2 weeks no one remembered that shyt.

Wayne's run on top. Yes. Over around 2013.

They remembered C5 it because it went on to sale 2 million copies and multiple songs went gold and platinum.

Streams show us if people still listen to music or not....C5 continued to stream well after the first week. It's also the 2nd highest 1st week streaming debut EVER.

Nas album is a great example of a flop. No one listened after the first week....it still didn't even crack 100K sold did it????
