I got in an argument about this with my patna the other day. How is that possible when all locs do is GROW like any other hair?! :mindblown: the ends loc, the root is new hair, how are you gonna bald prematurely? :gucci: I think men dealing with that were gonna go bald regardless and locs are the scapegoat :hhh:
it's the too-often retwists and the pulling on the scalp

Damn.

Were you reading, listening to music, did you have a job at the time?

What did you do when the hair was combed out?

It was my girl who did it before i met her. i have no idea what she did prob watching netflix with her girls or whatever. She had it in a fro for a bit then did a big chop

The problem is that a lot of people have this stigma of when newgrowth is visible and consider that time to get retwisted, and this is usually like 3 weeks to a month in. That constant retwisting starts to effect the scalp and hairline.

Although my hair is pretty long so it does help, I don't mind going with newgrowth showing for a good month to two months like this.

People only lose hair when they retwist too tight. Other than that it just usually genetic.

Traction Alopecia

Retwisting too often/too tight
Pulling hair up or back tightly the same way for years
Super heavy and long locks that are too much weight on your roots

Please do. :feedme:
Sorry for the delay. Just wanted to give entire perspective even though I probably still left some things. Plus I'm at work.
This is way longer than it has any right to be. :beli::beli:
Alright so first off, let me give info about my situation.

Second time w/ free forms after cutting them off the first time. They were about short medium to medium length (top locs were at my ear lobe/lowest we're just touching shoulders?) after nearly two years.

I searched on YouTube and found some good methods but ultimately chose rattail comb with silicone based moisturizer, hot water, and sandwich/snack bags.

The biggest factor excluding forcing myself to do it some days (damn near a part time job commitment) was preparation. I started out by using a spray bottle and wetting my hair with a lot of warm/hot water. After that I would take a very generous amount of moisturizer and apply thoroughly to a few locs. Then I would take a sandwich bag and rubber band wrapping the locs inside it to help loosen them. I would do this to another set of locs also. I did this to help loosen the second set of locs while I combed out the first set. I always staggered my preparation so that I could just finish a set then continue on to the following set.

How I worked:
Prep first set
Prep second set
*Comb out first set
Prep third set
*Comb out second set
Prep fourth set
And so on.

Each individual loc from tip to scalp would take approximately 30-60 minutes. And I would have 4-6 locs per set. I also split my head into regions. Top, back, left, right. Started with the left then to the top then the highest part of the back then right and finished lower back.

If I could do it over, I would do side then back, then work forward through the top and remaining side. Took breaks often just to rest my hands, arms, and shoulders :sadbron::sadbron::damn::damn: the area where the top and back meet!

Eventually finished but it is really dope when the progress shows. Alright so in all I finished up in May after starting in December but I was on some bullshyt as far as consistency. I could have been done in a month but I could get away with tying my hair back and as far as I could tell appear normal :manny:. Also another thing that I allowed myself to keep from being consistent was my job. I work in scrubs and hair caps (plus i wear bandanas) so I didn't have to have my hair looking decent for work:heh::whoa::whew:. Also I feel like free forms made it easier to comb out since mine were less rounded and more flat. That's just my experience, so who knows really.

All that being said, preparation and consistency is what I would recommend if you have to go solo. If not definitely get some help because I considered my locs short and they took a while individually. But it was a dope experience; just podcasts, music, and putting in the time, seeing progress and finishing. It was cool.

Thinking about doing this, I’ve been locking since October and it hasn’t really locked :scust:

I still got compliments on it, but I’m tired of getting it done :ehh:

I’ve been growing my hair since August 2017. What are some long hair styles for men(besides braids and locs) where I won’t look like a bytch?

I really don’t know ... I don’t think I can be of any help to you on this ..that’s not my urrrea of knowledge. Never dated or interacted that much with men that had dreads like that before tbh. Or the dudes that I have been, I really wasn’t paying attention to their hair like that to notice dread styles. Sorry b ... no ideas.

(And I don’t have a problem with dreads or trying to play you by saying that- )
