Man, I've heard about this shyt for YEARS. If you lived in nyc in 2016 you saw ads everywhere. But I always dismissed it, the story of a founding father told through hip hop/r&b? :childplease:Sounded corny to me plus I was never into plays/musical so I just kept it pushing

2 weeks ago my daughter makes me watch it with her on Disney plus and brehs :wow: this shyt truly blew my mind. I've watched it 5 times since then

I don't even know where to start on what makes this so good. The rhyming/acting/choreography/singing, I couldn't believe the cast kept it up for 2hrs 30 minutes. That part really blew my mind because you can tell just how much work they put into each set

The cast was phenomenal, im glad to see everyone's career took off after this came out because they truly deserve it. Leslie Odom jr, daveed Diggs and Renee goldberry were fukking incredible. Leslie killed it as Aaron Burr, he had so many dope moments and was a amazing "villian". Daveed went the fukk off as Lafayette/Jefferson, he such a performer with a great cadence to go with his rhyming

And man, Renee goldsberey absolutely murdered Satisfied. I put her performance on that song against any female singer performance in the past 20 years. That was the song that pulled me in, her singing/rapping, the rewinded choreography, that entire performance is dare I say perfect

Lin manuel was dope, he doesn't have the greatest voice but the fact that he wrote every single song gives him a pass IMO. Also love that he made sure the cast was diverse as hell, this would never work otherwise

This play is truly a piece of art. It's a giant milestone/achievement for Hip Hop, it made a lot of people that weren't into rap appreciate the complexity of rhyming while telling a great story. 10/10 for me, can't say enough good things about it

Did you see it and what did you think??

I hadn't checked it out exactly for the reasons you also hesitated. Especially after middle aged white female co-workers were giving it glowing endorsements

. Your fantastic write-up has sold me though. I'll give it a chance and share my thoughts.

My parents took me when I was in high school—I always loved plays. I remember not liking Hamilton though.

Let me see if I'm understanding this correctly: Hamilton is a play about Alex's life....in essentially blackface. Amirite?

Every member of the cast is black/hispanic, one girl is half Asian I think. The only white actor is the guy who plays king George

I see what you did there saying blackface, but no I don't think it's some c00n shyt. I like the way the creator put it "its the story of America then, told by America now"

:lupe: Well, damn. OP had me sold on that shyt even if I always thought it looked corny. What yall didn't like about it?
I was like 15 or 16 breh. I think I was bored. Back then I liked cutesy musicals like rent, mama Mia, lion king, etc lol. Hamilton was a snooze fest for me. But at my age now I think I’d probably think differently.

I saw the play in Chicago. It was good, but it was too long. The female lead was fine!

It is corny :yeshrug:

Let me ask what is it that you find corny about it

The 2 main reasons I've seen people say its corny are
1) old white people love it, so you refuse to believe it's good or be open minded to it
2)a puerto rican wrote it and he does a lot of "rappity-raps" like Eminem

Both reasons involve race, which is corny as hell to me. The point of the play is to have a story, beginning/middle/end and they did it with rhyming and r&b cuts and managed to tell a great story that makes you wanna go back and study the revolutionary war

I thought the musical was great. Wayne Brady played Aaron Burr in my city.

One of the times you see real economic inequality. Here you have a musical centered around a black cultural movement (hip hop) that would speak directly to inner-city black kids and might provide a way to spark a new interest in history with black kids and the only people that could afford tickets were rich white people from tony suburbs. Tickets were expensive and the audiences were typically all-white. Not accessible to every day people considering the art form they were using.
