I'm a fan, but I'm just besides myself sometimes thinking that this man is 40 something, been around for over 20 years and has yet to make a song with any real substance.

Of course not. You should know that Jay-Z has no song of substance, no classic album, no classic song, been outshined on every song, and is a weak lyricist with no flow.

I mean, as a "fan" you should already know this right? :comeon:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not even trying to throw shade at the dude and I'm not even trying to go in the direction of stannery or "haterism" or anything like that. As a businessman and a general pop culture force to be reckoned with, there's no doubt he's number one.

There's no doubt he has classic albums and classic songs.

As being one of the most famous and accomplished rappers, he's number one.

As far as lyricism and skills go he's definitely top 5-10.

But as far as content goes (and when I mean content, I mean songs that make you think and hit the soul) he's probably not even top 20.

Nas and Eminem have songs like that...as far as it's concerned, I'm still waiting for that Jay Z song that really hits me.

It just depends on the listener, as he has plenty of songs like that to me.

Regrets (my fav Jay-Z song)
You Must Love Me
Allure
Song Cry
Where Have You Been
This Can't Be Life
Soon You'll Understand
Meet The Parents
Anything

^And that's just off the top off my head.

His songs like that hit my soul more than any Eminem or Nas song.

I'll just say it...Jay has his lane and has mastered it, but his material is just...shallow.

And that's pretty much the problem. You have this preconceived notion that all his music is shallow, so even if the songs are clearly there, you are programmed to dismiss them as such, and just skim through his shyt, if you even listen at all.

You're not a real Jay-Z fan, then. Stop sayin' stuff like this.

I'm not even gonna dignify this statement with "proof" of the scores of "substance" filled songs.

Yes, Jay is basically a dude that markets an image, rather than create art, nowadays. But, I look at albums like The Blueprint 3 and Magna Carta Holy Grail :gag: and still understand he has plenty of GOAT candidate like bars all through his catalog.

I've basically accepted that he's done and really has been takin a victory lap over the 6 years or so.

But, yea' The Blueprint 3 and Magna Carta Holy Grail are horrible Rap records.

Maybe I'm just judging by his newest material...like you said before (and listed) he has those songs and is very capable of making them.
