That violence escalated on Nov. 11, 1909, when a black man named Will “Froggy” James was convicted for the rape and murder of Annie Pelley, a local 24-year-old white shop clerk in a dry goods store. Expecting violence, the sheriff hid James in the woods. This was to no avail.

James was discovered by the mob and returned to the town’s center to be publically hung. James was strung up at 8:00 pm, but the rope snapped. The angry mob instead riddled his body with bullets and then dragged him for a mile by a rope before he was torched.

Remnants of his body were taken as souvenirs.

By the late 1960s, Cairo was fully segregated and no white business owner would hire a black resident. Cairo banks refused to hire black residents and the state threatened to withdraw its money if these banks did not reverse their policy.

Goldsboro/Etters, PA came off like that to me when me and my friends were driving to Hershey’s Park from Maryland. Etters was maybe a good 15 mins south of Harrisburg where HP is at. Stopped for gas at the Sunoco off the ramp (prolly Rt. 262) and while I didn’t see any stares or experience any verbal bullshyt while pumping gas, the place still gave me the vibe of not wanting to linger around for too long. Some of the Cacs I’ve seen around there came off as a mixture of Archie Bunker working class and lowkey Italian redneck types Trash ass looking town/borough

I live in the middle of Illinois. Aint a town full of white ppl Im scared to stop in and pump gas at night. Lil towns like Bethany, Bement, Hervey City, etc.

Somewhere in between Mobile and Pensacola. It was late at night, maybe 10 or 11 and I had to stop for gas, the light was on, my brother wanted to get something to eat and use the bathroom. But it just looked suspect, a bunch of Harleys and older white men just hanging out at the gas station. I was like nah, I'll pull over to the side of the highway further up and you can handle your business there we'll eat later. I put like $10 in and dipped. They were watching us the whole time.
