Didnt join but always been in areas where gangs were active from school to home. Had a lot of fam who got caught up in that shyt too so I always had to make sure I avoid areas where they had beef with the crews there.
Me being kinda nerdy kept me out of most shyt but I did have a few times where I had to defend myself or had fam back me up.
Nowadays I am always strapped and never go places alone so I aint no mark when ignorant nikkas go hunting.

I wasn't in a gang per se but I was a young rapper and I was down with this massive posse. DJing parties and different little clubs and gym jams every weekend.
Once it was like 30 of us and there were no parents to supervise, the bullshyt began. Niqqas selling dope, fighting of course, beefin with other groups who's purpose was to be a gang. Funny thing was, niqqas was mad at us for being in the newspaper cause they wanted that kinda rep.
Not alot of shooting was going on, but it started happening more often. My boy got popped and lived. One of them got murked.
About this time it was time for me to choose a college. I chose one far away. Street shyt ain't for me Brehs. Well, I loved it when it made sense. Niqqas throwing hands if they had beef. There was honor. The part I can't do is the mindless random violence or the careless shooter who may have a legit beef but he chooses to settle it while drunk by shooting in the middle of a crowd.
Whover answered that gangs have been a benefit: please enlighten me. I saw nothing but bad and I was just running with a bunch of misguided wanna be Hip Hoppers.

I mean I grew up around with nyggas that were in local sets and whatnot (and I won't even talk about some of my distant family) but I never got involved that ish at all. Was pretty much always the quiet/nerdy dude that was into video games and I pretty much stayed in my lane until I left for college

But nah I don't think I've heard much about hands over here. Maybe cuz I'm not in the hood but even still I rarely hear anything. Most times you would hear about a shooting but I think everything may be drug related. I don't think it's as bad as when the cocaine cowboys were running around but I'm sure there's still beef out there. Most folks are transplants or immigrants so the sets are based on where they came from.

murder rates for one were waaaay worse back in the days of these "street rules". for example, you're telling me back in early 90s Chi, when murders were weeell into the 800s n 900s they were killing less innocents than the last couple years in the Chi where murders are in the 400s and 500s

Never had a problem with gang members they actually have helped me out and we're respectful. It is the fake wannabes that usually cause trouble. This fake older Latin King (back when they still existed) used to always cause trouble with my classmates especially this chubby Uruguayan nerd looking kid.

(Nowadays gangs are multi-ethnic.) So this big Filipino dude from our class came in out of nowhere, rocked the fakkits jaw and later the real LKS came by to G-check him again. His grandmom's came to pick him up later and smacked him over the head with her cane he was battered and bruised still trying to be flippant and act hard.

Do you history on the how the formation of gangs started in America, how they correlate within the communal, political, and criminal structures then come back and get at me.

Okay i'll go back farther then to 70s, and my point still stands. Chicago had almost 1000 murders in 1974 for instance and the 70s had a higher, same or very slightly lower murder rate than the 90s.
I watched an HBO special where they followed a coroner in Little Rock trying to change things. Him and a bunch of guys were standing in front of a house during the filming (coroner was bring lunch as nice gesture to a gang) and a drive-by occurred. Cameraman was trying to capture it all and avoid getting hit.
