I remember Rick also talking shyt about MTV back in the day for its "FM Rock" format... in particular I think he was dissing JJ Jackson, the lone black VJ of those early years. he had a HIT record but MTV was still shytting on him. did videos and everything. need to go find a quote.
Motown let Rick down too because they should have had his back when MTV didn't play Super Freak (Blame Jay Lasker for that), even though he had a huge rock following back then. Hell, EWF had a huge hit with Let's Groove and MTV wouldn't play their video, either.

What many don’t know is that one of the reasons MJ was able to be played because his record company was down for him, something Rick James didn’t have:
Walter Yetnikoff, the president of Jackson's record company CBS Records, approached MTV about playing the "Billie Jean" video, which MTV had not ever played in spite of Jackson's success as a musical artist. Yetnikoff became enraged when MTV refused to play the video, and he threatened to go public with MTV's stance on racial discrimination. "I said to MTV, 'I'm pulling everything we have off the air, all our product. I'm not going to give you any more videos. And I'm going to go public and fukking tell them about the fact you don't want to play music by a black guy.'"[1] MTV relented and played the "Billie Jean" video in heavy rotation.

I was about to comment on that too.

Yetnikoff threatened to pull all of the CBS artists off of MTV if they didn't play Billie Jean.

Motown didn't even want to go to war for Lionel Richie when he was scoring his first solo hits.

Don't even THINK about pulling that age crap because I was around during Rick's prime, too.

And, quiet as it's kept, Off The Wall paved the way for an album like Street Songs to crossover.

So, again, where is the proof?
how did off the wall pave the way for street songs? off the wall was riding off the disco movement, why do you think he was going to discos? so THEY COULD PLAY HIS shyt. if you were around and an adult in 1981, then when it comes to the year 1981, nobody can dispute rick James popularity that year. nobody can dispute when street song tour came to your town, it was a big deal. but like i said, only the growns folks can tell that storyy.

Yeahhhh so this is fake news. I figured it when I read the article again - no links, nothing.

HBO said that they've not done anything and Oprah has doubled down
