With the new win 9/threahold supposedly coming out, should i cop a cheap chromebook or asus notebook on 8.1 both under 300? I already have a beast htpc running win 7,just need a laptop to finish up school, web browse ,youtube and netflix

If you just need it to browse and surf and don't mind the Google ecosystem, get a chromebook. If you neefd to do light school work get a cheap laptop

Besides 1080p(which IMO on a screen that size don't matter) and SSD, he payingg a premium for the rest of the features which all have to do with portability , and since it not a hybrid that touchscreen willl be barely used

For that almost $900,he could get a i5,750gig to1tb hard drive , back-lit keyboard, 720p regular laptop. Mightt not be as pretty as the Asus though

Sigh, yes it does matter, 1080p on a 13.3 inch is very noticeable upgrade from a 720p screen. Plus its a IPS screen with great viewing angles. Most of the cheaper laptops have inferior TN panels with horrible viewing angles and color shifting. The Asus and most other ultrabooks have a backlit keyboard. Yes it would be nice to have 8GB of ram and a bigger ssd drive but they are really pricey. This Asus has a i5 cpu in it which is plenty fast enough for most users. Just like anything in life you pay for better engineering, with slim form factor plus good specs and it has a premium feel.

Some updates...

First off rest in peace to the homie @Smooth3d for all his help in here.

Second, so I was in a bind and copped a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 13" + i7 + 256SSD for $1200. I've been using it for a week but now I'm like :patrice:

I can take this thing back to Best Buy and order a Macbook Air using my student discount for like $1039. Using the Lenovo I've come to realize a few things:
-There's hardly ever a reason to use the other modes so the main selling point is irrelevant to me
-I don't think I need an i7 or even 256 gb space for what I'll mostly be doing (web browsing, excel, and word docs)
-I originally wanted a Surface Pro 3 but it wasn't out and settled on this. But the Yoga in tablet form is pretty pointless. It doesn't have a digitizer so the pen support is worthless
-I'm not a fan of the touchscreen on Windows 8.1 . Sure it comes in handy but it seems unnecessary.
-The battery life is only meh (6.5 hrs) and it does get pretty hot.

Any thoughts? Has anyone ever returned a laptop during the trial period?

Lenovo - ok nice design good build
Macbook Air - solid choice, good design, battery life is good, solid OS

Honestly bruh Surface 3 is the bomb! 999$ with i5 and 4GB of RAM that's one mean machine. You can use it as a laptop, tablet and as a portable gaming machine w/ Xbox One controller.

- 2 cameras
- Digital stylus
- New Keyboard
- Decent battery life
- Windows 8.1

You aren't going to take an L with this machine.

I thought about it but I couldn't wait. I needed a laptop asap. Plus Microsoft is dumb for not shipping demo units to all the non-MS retail stores like Best Buy. The nearest Microsoft store is 45 minutes away. :camby: But I'm going to be watching the SP3 to see how well it does. For now I really like this MBA.

On a windows laptop you can download apps thru torrents for free while the apps for Mac are harder to come by cause you gotta buy everything .
