I am sure this is a common problem, I am trying to set up a basic Wordpress sports blog that doesn't look like a blogspot generic blog, but I am really struggling to understand the Wordpress interface on how to make my vision come to life, can anyone help?

What are trying to do exactly. Finding and applying a template you like would be the best bet. Coding for wordpress from scratch isn't necessarily for the feint of heart. Wix.com also has very easy tools to create a decent site. It all depends what you are trying to do. I personally have a wordpress site that I purchased and modified a template for

You might also consider just setting up a facebook page separate for your thoughts on sports. You'd most likely get more hits than you would on an independent site.

A simple template with four options on the top to guide you through the site w/ a mission statement on the front page sort of like this

Best way to learn is to play with it, pause. The navigation stuff is easy, once you get you're host and WP installed, you'll see. Bluehost.com is a good host, its cheap and they have one click install. There's youtube videos showing the steps to install WP on Bluehost.

For themes, go to Themeforest.com & look around.

If you need tutorials, I know of a few I could send you. I work with WordPress everyday as our clients use it mostly.

ThemeForest, yall beat me to it

I would HIGHLY recommend buying/leasing a template beause a outdated template will get your site hacked into (learned my lesson)

I got mine from there also, just added a few modifications of my own

I think I still have my WordPress Lynda.com training videos, I'll have to check when I get home

So how long does a regular license last for a themeforrest template before you have to renew?

The Bruised Ego of Dumb B*tches
Easy on the WP plug ins.

They will burn you if you aren't continually checking for updates.

Also, have you had a look at Bootstrap?

There's a lot else you could do for a small website.

Keep your options open in terms of what you're able to do.

Can be really rewarding and so much fun.

Best of luck.

@TheLukieBaby

This isnt necessarily true. I was getting a shyt ton of hits on my old sports blog/ website. I marketed it as a online men's magazine type thing and had a lot of original content plus linked articles and pictures. If you get the bots to crawl the site for keywords right and verify it with google then you can do well. One article I wrote on a Pom Juice lawsuit got 570 views in one day :lolbron:

Plus..youre really only gonna get hits on Facebook if you work your ass off and use their overpriced advertising framework. They switched the formula for promotion of pages a while back to make it far less advantageous for most non personal pages.Wordpress does more work for you for free and you have more customization options on there. All i was paying for on my site was domain name which was like 10 bucks a year.

I still use WP a bit, for a couple different sites. I shoulda never deleted my original one...deleted all the content but didnt delete the infrastructure of it because i got accepted into their adword revenue program and i just switched it all to the website for a company i work for :troll:
