I don't think anyone ever really brought them to his attention to be honest.

A lot of people don't even know that they're errors because it would require an actual education in the sciences to be able to debunk some of that stuff.

Then it's very dangerous to treat this material as educational. You know how systems of peer review and bias elimination work and you know why they're so important, so why should those principles not apply here? Why not hold what purports to be black history to the same standards you would everything else?

I'm not saying the material has to be complex or inaccessible but for you to call something educational it should at a minimum be rigorously sourced otherwise you end up misleading people.
A background in science would help to a degree, but presumably he didn't just make all that stuff up. He sourced it and you don't need to be educated in science to be able to determine whether or not a source seems reliable.
