If you're asking what is the point of impeachment if it doesn't mean removal, it is to determine if there is enough evidence to warrant a more lengthy trial, like being indicted by a grand jury.
If you're asking why the Dems are doing this if they surely won't get the required 2/3rds of the Senate to convict Trump at trial, mostly about putting a spotlight on his corruption

Dems are really rushing it IMO. I DO believe that Trump did some sort of foul play during the campaign, but no real proof has been shown, just suspicions and allegation. Lots of politicians do scandals, but Trump and his team left too many trails for only for Dems to take him out.

Truth be told, I hate all the time wasted on trying impeach trump. It doesn't get to the heart the true structural problem with 45's presidency.
He lost by 3 million votes, yet still won over a few states by less than 80,000 votes.
The reality is America needs to focus on eliminating the electoral college, as well as revamp the senate.
It's existence is an unfair advantage to smaller states with a less significant population.
This form of discrimination is only magnified when, considering the contemporary trend of people moving from small towns and rural areas to large cities, primarily on the coast.
By 2050 it's projected that most of the world will live in major cities.

It is flawed indeed. Like the idea that Supreme Court justices appointed by a President are 'impartial'
In reality, everything is about just following the party line.
Like Trump himself said, he could shoot someone on camera in the middle of 5th avenue and Republicans would still stand by him.
All you really need to know anyway:
- Impeachment is not removal
- Impeachment = indictment, now a trial happens in the Senate
- Conviction which results in removal requires 66.66% of the Senate to vote for it, which means 20 Republican Senators would have to vote to convict Trump. Not gonna happen.
- Trump is still eligible to run in 2020
