The mainstays in our freezer was usually Breyer's (the least at first due to price), Dolly Madison, and there was a direct competitor to Breyer's who's name I can't recall at this moment. I don't think that brand exists anymore. Breyer'a became
thee mainstay later on starting around 91 when our financial situation got a little bit better. My mom loves Breyer's so once we hit that tax bracket, that's all we'd buy (with a Haagen Dazs changeup every so often).
When times were really tough, we had the pleasure of looking forward to White Rose or store brand.
It's crazy how only certain brands were acceptable when you were a kid due to advertising and the fact that it wasn't your money paying for it. Nowadays all it takes is a tub of Great Value Rocky Road in the freezer to get my iced cream jones going !
