houston.
Get a mechanic and do a pre-purchase inspection before you decide to buy a car. This is also a good way to negotiate the price if you find something wrong with it.

Don't always believe the CarFax report. Not everything is reported. That's why doing s pre-purchase inspection is critical.

I bought a 2010 Lexus GS a few weeks ago for $16k and had a Lexus mechanic inspect the car and found nothing wrong. It was in great condition and Maintenance was well taken care of and done at a Lexus Dealership. I bought the car immediately.

Did you buy it from the same dealership the mechanic works at? What if you only take your car to chain company?

Low miles.

Make sure it wasn't a fleet or service car.

Don't buy some dumb ass old luxury car either. That shyts only cool on here.

Private sellers you can find some real gems and deals but who knows how long it will take before you find something.
Maaaaan, u preachin to the choir about the old luxury car shyt.

nikkaz around here be coppin 2006 BMW 745's and think they stuntin'. When they have to take it to the shop, they dont know what they're in for. It aint gonna be the same as gettin that park avenue fixed:mjpls:

How much is gap insurance and where do u get it from

Its about 500.00.. you get it from the dealer. Its factored into the car price.. trust me, everyone should have it. Covers in case you total your car. If the insurance payout isnt enough to cover the balance of the loan, it makes sure the debt owed will be erased.

I had to pay 3 more notes after the insurance payoff cuz I didnt have gap.. paying a car note on a car you dont have can fuhk a person up if you cant afford too.
Im on my last note of my totaled car because I didn't have it.. while paying my new car note

Use the power of depreciation..i just copped a 3 year old car with 40k miles at 33% MSRP...the first owner lost 2/3rds of its value ..the original owner took most of the value loss so i should get 100k miles or 5 years of trouble free motoring at which point i can dump it on someone else to take their chances or just keep driving it into the ground

the point is the depreciation is logarithmic the the value drops really quick then slows so you want to be on the slow end of that curve but not at the very end where maintenance costs start rising really high.

A lot of good advice on this thread. I would also add to look out for two things depending on the region. Look out for a mildew smell in the car and also check the seat railings and the underbody of the car for excessive rust. This won't always show on a carfax but this is a telling symptom that car has excessive water or flood damage. Also check the seals of the doors and the seals surrounding the hood of the car when you open it up. Sometimes if the car has been in an accident that may not show on a carfax, people take them to cut rate body shops and they do rush jobs and don't use quality paint or align the panels properly.

Just some other stuff to look out for.

okay so since i've made this thread i'm nearing closer to actually pulling the trigger. i would say i'm lookin to spend like 20k max now, probably paying cash.

i saw a 2012 mercedes C300 on craigslist with only like 35k miles on it... owner was askling like 18,000. looked clean as fukk. just wanna know if i'm on the right track or if i can do better for that kind of money. i know the coli brehs advised against buying an older luxury car but i really wanna buy something that commands respect and a maxima just doesn't do it the same.

any help would be appreciated.

So you want to buy a car that commands respect? From who are you trying to get respect, because I don't respect people based off of the car they drive because that doesn't mean crap. I know a lot of people that drive nice luxury cars yet have 500 in the bank and are always borrowing money
