Well part of that is true man I don't know why you're acting like it's not. If you have an older fan base, they are more likely to buy albums than kids who download everything. But the biggest reason she did those numbers is like I said before--she's an OG. She went on late night shows, the views and good morning america to promote this. She hadn't been on a late show in like two decades. It's no surprise that someone who had her first hit in like 1960-something and has dropped a number 1 album in every decade since then would pull these kind of numbers with that type of promoting....that is generations of fans. Maybe, if cats started making projects people felt they HAD to have again....this excuse again

If you think they're not on the net downloading records, they're not exactly at Best Buy fiending out buying albums either. If you're that old, you probably have someone else buy it for you and they DO know the ins and outs of buying/downloading music. Look at the iTunes album charts right now. Somebody's downloading all those records. They just support with their $$ which we don't do. Her fans let her drop whenever she pleases, meanwhile Kendrick Lamar gotta drop a song just to keep thirsty ass ADD having motherfukkers from questioning where his buzz went.
Yeah, but that's because her status is solidified and hip hop has always been a competitive sport. All the legends dropped frequently in the beginning. Everyone does...that's just hip hop. If you're not dropping it's because you're milking an album, and you're present on other shyt too. Kendrick doesn't feature much, and when he does....he's more miss than hit to be honest.
People buy singles, there's a difference between buying a single and wanting an album. I also don't get this "we" don't thing. No artist is selling that much. Only straight up superstars are. Hip Hop sales compared to other genres (aside from maybe country) are not all that far off and are probably better. If I'm getting my mother a new (not an old album she doesn't have but a new release) album, I go buy it...I don't download it. That doesn't make sense as a gift. Even then, you're appealing to that older fanbase. The younger person actually making the purchase is just a conduit. I guess I always assumed everyone was like that

Do yall really wanna get into a album sales discussion?. shyt is different now. No genres are selling. This aint the late 90s/early 2000s anymore. You know how many albums went plat or gold in 2013 and 2014? Not many! You dudes always try to find a way to pop shyt about HipHop/R&B sales. R&B doesn't even get half the promo that those pop albums get. Katy Perry/ Jessie J getting played on Hot 97, Power and getting played on 106 and park. Bar, I see what you are trying to say but it's like you are only making it like "THE YOUTH" defines who listens to music and that's not the case. Again Is Barbara relevant to pop culture? Well she's #1 so I think that proves her relevance. It may not be the "young" 'demo but I'm sure she does have young fans. There are plenty of Legendary artist who can't get a #1 album right now.
The youth always define popular culture when we're talking about music. It is who it is marketed towards--from advertisements to festivals, etc. It's why when Fox News was killing MSNBC in rating, Keith Olbermann always pointed out that the most important demographic 18 to 30ish was watching his show more than O'Reily's. It's why you always have the stereotype of the parent trying to be down. I'm not saying that there aren't markets that target other demographics. But generally speaking, teenagers and young adults define what is "in." It's why old heads started complaining when that snap shyt took over--the youth was not listening to them and thus they were making less money and weren't being heard, etc. That's just how I see it--the artist can be older--but a sizeable portion of their audience will be young

As for Chris numbers, they are lukewarm but considering all the bad press he has had since RiRi and all his legal issues, The number's aren't that bad but Chris has fallen really far. Since he hit RiRi in 2009, he has Yet to go Platinum yet this is his 4th album since that. Before that he had 2 Multi-Platinum albums and was headed to being basically in Usher's lane. Had the RiRi incident didn't happen, Chris could of been headed to 4x Platinum maybe even 5x Platinum. It's clear that incident is still affecting his sales. Same with KanYe and the Taylor Swift, you can litterally trace his sales dropping off from that point:
