The Boom Bap Era
I've just resigned to the fact that today's hip-hop is no longer for people my age.
Imagine being 40+ years old listening to today's music.

The back of Mordith's mom's throat
Bitter old nikka babble. :mjlol:

Most Boom Bap artists were rapping about the same shyt (robbing, killing op’s and drug dealing) back in the 90’s. Drill rap is obviously newer and hot right now so off course Pete is going to hate on it.

Why these old nikkas try to act like 90s hip hop was all gumdrops and lollipops lyrically? 🍭

:snoop:
90s/Boom Bap rappers didn't present only the death. They told about the downfalls, the Ls. There may be a few exceptions, but there was some semblance of balance and a message. Even the most gangsta rappers would tell you not to do the shyt, or talk about how fukked up the game was.

Also, the artistry and skill levels involed are light years away from each other. 90% of these new nikkas are making the same song over and over.

I don't know about "disrupting the soul" and all that, but these nikkas are almost all ass at rapping, over the most unoriginal, repetitive beats.

reality comes before the music

the artist are emerging from trash circumstances

to fix the music you would have to fix everything about the world artists are coming from

*

So what about the artists that came from good homes and environment, but willingly decide to dwell on negativity to look cool? :jbhmm:

Add to that, there was some variety in the mainstream, at least initially. I do think the emergence of gangsta rap was the precursor to all of this though.

Melle Mel spoke on the "it's the environment" thing. Hip hop emerged from the south Bronx, which at the time was one of the worst places in America. Yet somehow the music wasn't about thuggin at all. There was a separation between the art and the corner. That changed once NWA brought it into the mainstream (read: white suburbs), and record companies didn't want to sign any other kind of act.
