Wow. I have a feeling this kid is gonna be really good. Havent seen anyone this confident about their craft since The Weeknd when he first appeared on twitter.Ummmmmm, The kid was 20 when I saw him at the top of the year. So im assuming he prolly jus turned 21.
Needing a NY rapper to blow really isn't that serious, especially if you're not gonna like that rapper anyway (French being the biggest example of this). If French blew up and became a surprise success, none of y'all would claim that as a W for the city because of how y'all feel towards French, so just be happy if a rapper regardless of region blows up making the kind of music you like and let it be.
I think in general NY holds its own artists to a higher standard. Cuz technically we already have 3 stars in the city. ASAP, FRENCH, n Nicki, Yet the city still feels we are lacking.
When in reality im pretty sure Nicki Minaj sold more records than any other artist from any region this year.
Its the gift and curse of being from New York. Ja Rule was selling bookoo records, yet the streets still turned on him.![]()
The streets only turned on Ja when it became cool to do so. Make no mistake, there are a lot of people who hated Ja in 2003 yet had Pain Is Love and Rule 3:36 in their collection. (and even after the backlash, Clap Back, The Crown, and New York were bangers)
as far as the higher standard goes, I think there are artists that make music reminiscent of that, but NY fans feel burned by what is popular and in fairness, every time NY backs an up and coming rapper, something goes wrong (Papoose and Saigon being the 2 biggest examples, Max, Stack to a lesser degree). Not only is NY gun shy about supporting our own, we also only measure success the way things used to be (for example, ScHoolboy Q dropped HnC and most people feel it was successful for what it was, we'd be criticizing it for 1. not evoking the same feeling you got when you heard Illmatic and 2. not selling a lot).
NY fans are like crackheads. We're always trying to chase a high we'll never feel again (the high being the absurdly high bar rappers seemingly met with ease) and it leaves us looking flabby, sick, and miserable.
Alot of great albums came from NYC this year.
If you expecting MTV and Rolling Stones to put a spotlight those said guys, then I don't know what to tell y'all.
Aren't those French and ASAP guys all over the radio and tv? There not my cup of tea, but there you go.![]()
french n rocky is from the town, but alotta nikkaz feel they aint reppin it right, they sound like amalgamations of a ny/trap/southern rapper, which is whatever, but the traditionalists would consider that bitin/swagger jackin. the empire needs a nikka that aint scared 2 be from ny or sound like it...............
Trust me, in no way am I fan.
But, the only new guy I feel could carry NY on his scrawny back is the 17-year-old kid : Joey Badass.
This big ass Metropolitan should have mcs crawling from everywhere.
NYC Hip-Hop history is illustrious, yet we are dormant now.![]()
