No but his risk taking in subject matter and execution is something that should be respected and built upon but the more talented...
There has been self-depreciating/anti-consumption rap long before Macklemore. And the insincere/low key ignorant way dude rapped about homosexuality is nothing to be celebrated. Macklemore is for people who want to identify with the edginess of rap without actually confronting the social context/realities behind its aggression and the history of hip hop as a culture and artform. Dude is a terrible rapper, and on top of that has no respect for the culture.

He was crying about not deserving the Grammies, but Kendrick was there... if he really meant that shyt, he could have not accepted the award, or given it to dude at the ceremony. Instead he took the award, and waited till he was far far away in a limo, texted Kendrick and put up the screenshot of it on IG. Theres not 1 god damn thing sincere at all about this dude, and he's terrible. So no, there's nothing he's doing we need to emulate. If rap is going to talk about homosexuality it has to be sincere and respectful. Other thanthat he brings nothing new to the table.

up your subject matter...

I think that's what I'm getting at more than anything...

SUBJECT MATTER
Every single album nominated for best rap album including Macklemore talked about different subjects (J. Cole got snubbed though). But every single one of them accept what every the hell Kanye was doing on Yeezus had better rapping than him. Jay-Z tried for about 6 verses on that entire MCHG (which is only a bit higher than a 7 to me), and was still a better rapper than Macklemore. That says a lot about the caliber of emcee that just won best rap album. I don't get this whole "up your lyrical content." He didn't rap about anything other rappers have not, but he had this corny commercial singles and that's why he blew. There is something to be said about crafting a message that appeals to the masses, but that is different from creating records strictly to placate the masses and that has no heart in it. There are leagues between Dear Mama and Same Love

I'd rather someone fake being socially conscious than fake being in the streets and living that life or fake what you have or what you can get...
Id rather people not rap at all if they are only going to bring more fakeness to the game, and on top of that not even make good music. "Thrift Shop" makes me cringe.

This college graduate cac duo isnt Hip Hop. How can they be labeled as such?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Their first EP ever in 2008 was influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And they made sure everyone knew that. :deadrose:
Then you got this Ryan Lewis person claiming he's a DJ, just like Paris Hilton does.
Just because you make beats on the computer and play them for your older friend at a show, dont make you a DJ :shaq2:

The artist has to understand not every body has a sophisticated palate...It's his responsibility to make his message edible to everyone if he wants notoriety on a stage like the Grammys...

But if you just want to be hood rich and have other meaningless success, we all know you can do that too.

If you want to be praised for your bars...you can do that too.

To each his own.

I don't know about ya'll, but this shyt got me inspired honestly.

Anthrax covered Public Enemy's "Bring da Noize". In terms of Kendrick showing up for white approval, he was nominated for album of the year, so why wouldn't he show up?

Don't listen to him. He think that black music in the hood should be all about materialism, ignorance, hoes, and guns. There are diverse set of people in the hood that never get their voices heard, because they don't conform to that limited subject matter. That is the bigger injustice. IMO

It's your opinion obviously, it's just nonsensical and in context plainly ridiculous...Kendrick just dropped an album that seemingly personifies everything you're talking about rappers "need to do"...dropped a wildly creative concept album that was both lyrical and appealed to all kinds of demographics (it's one of the biggest albums in years, sh!t's platinum-plus)..he turned song about alcohol abuse and the pressures that lead to it into a legitimate hit record...he's the ultimate "step your lyrical content up while still making it appealing to the masses" rapper...yet he still loss to wack ass off beat cac-rap popstar Macklemore...I'm just struggling to see how anybody walks away from Kendrick getting robbed at the Grammy's with "Oh wow golly gee willikers...guess this should let us know we need to step our lyrical content up :troll:" as the lesson learned...MACKLEMORE BEAT THE UNIVERSALLY HAILED CLASSIC GOOD KID MAAD CITY FOR BEST RAP ALBUM...and you're in here making cliche arguments bout "if we weren't too busy making trap rap and being hood stars this wouldn't happen" like he beat out random ass niche mixtape acts like the Migos or Young Scooter or some sh!t

What the fukk are you talking bout??

What you never understood is this was not a thread to compare Macklemore to Kendrick or choose sides on that...

This is a thread for people to stop complaining about who won and to work on your craft...A challenge to artist to do better...The majority of artist have not created work like Kendrick and their are a lot of artist that can IMO...

I'm in the mind state to just put up or shut up...

I guess homie...using the grammy screw-job as the catalyst for whatever point you're trying to make just seems silly as fukk though...it'd be like the day after the superbowl getting decided on a painfully obvious blown call, making a thread talking about "Yeah the outcome was shot all to hell, the team that deserved to win got flat out raped and screwed, and it ruined the integrity of the entire game.... buuuuuuuut teams in the NFL in general need to work on their defenses"

:beli: What the fukk are you talking bout?
