Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane was placed on injured reserve Thursday.


Kane missed practice because of a meeting with doctors, coach Paul Maurice said. Kane had been playing through an undisclosed injury, Maurice confirmed to the Winnipeg Free Press.

Kane was scratched Tuesday when the Jets lost to the Vancouver Canucks in overtime, their fifth straight defeat. Maurice said it was a coach's decision.

"We've dealt with it from my end and so far as it can be dealt with," Maurice said.

"I know that when I come out and say 'coach's decision' that I open all of this up to a tremendous amount of speculation, and I can live with that."

Kane had 10 goals and 22 points in 37 games. He was out from Dec. 28 until Jan. 10 with a lower-body injury.

At 3.41 shots per game, this is the first season since the franchise moved to Winnipeg that he's averaged less than 3.88.

The Jets recalled forward Patrice Cormier from St. John's of the American Hockey League.

Winnipeg hosts the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.
