Man they played the game all wrong...first off, they should have never told him the amount. Secondly, they should have made sure his needs were being met before they started to splurge. He wouldn’t even have the time to feel slighted if he has a house, car, new clothes. and is fresh out of rehab. This is how I would have done this:
$ 25,000 - I would take this for myself immediately - $375k remaining
$150,000 - Buy him house in the backwoods and hand him title - $225k remaining
$ 25,000 - money for rehab - $200k remaining
$ 25,000 - for property taxes. $175k remaining
$ 45,000 - New car + 20k surety bond with DMV in lieu of insurance - $130k remaining
$ 10,000 - Resocialization e.g. ettiquette training, resume building, and job skills - $120k remaining
$ 20,000 - In managed fund at local bank that cannot be touched for minimum of 10 years. - $100k remaining
$ 10,000 - To me - $90,000 remaining
$ 5,000 - Makeover for him from famous person like Tan France and photoshoot - $85,000 remaining
$ 5,000 - Send him on 2 week cruise to Norway - $80,000 remaining
$ 25,000 - To me - $55,000 remaining
$ 40,000 - Deposited into his bank account free and clear - $15,000 remaining
$ 15,000 - In my pocket to use for PR purposes...photography, press releases showing his new hime and car, ads on fb showing the good deed and etc.
Basically I would make sure his needs were taken care while slowly trickling money away for myself. I would not do anything extravagant with my cut until he was completely settled in and comfortable. In my example, I would have ended up pocketing $75k but he would have been to rehab, had resocialization training, new car, new house, and money set aside for clothing, gas, property taxes, insurance. and more so he wouldn’t even have notice. He’d be thanking me up and down and I’d be all:

Don’t thank me this is God’s work...
But in the inside I’d be like...”no, thank you!”
