Hot Take: Chappelle Show had excellent writing but Key & Peele had damn good acting

Neil Brannan and David Chappelle explained (During the DVD commentary) that the live blood
of the Chappelle show was adlibing.......They further explained SNL has a very strict ''No Adlibbing'' rule
Damon Wayans was fired from SNL because he adlibed during a skit.

That's pretty wild. I guess you don't go on that long without having strict rules.

Of course the acting was better because K&P are real actors and Chapelle was funnier because he’s a professional comedian. They just played to their strengths

The wig department on K&P was amazing

Like take the NFL player names bit. That's a legitimately funny insight. But the problem was, after the first few names, they just started getting into a bunch of completely preposterous made-up names. It went from mocking the ghetto ass names that NFL players have to just "how many stupid names can we come up with," completely straying from the original point. When you beat a joke into the ground, you start to lose the human truth that made it so funny.

yup exactly. and then you add on the fact that they did 2 or 3 sequels to that skit and ran the joke even more into the ground

K&P show is horrid to watch. There’s specific sketches that are cool. But a whole episode helllllll noooo. 90% was super corny or dragged on way too long

I’ve never seen an episode. I’ve legit only seen the sketches that have been uploaded to YouTube over the years. But there’s been a lot of those. I don’t know what was in between the sketches, but I’ve definitely enjoyed the sketches

The production value was kind of low budget. So in that sense (visuals, effects, etc) I agree. It looks cheap. But the brilliance was everything else. I don’t think most people tuned in for next level set design and production quality. At the time it was a low budget show on a network that wasn’t huge yet.

Key & Peele were better PERFORMERS overall and their execution was brilliant, but they didn’t have “the magic” that made Chappelle special

not a hot take, the production qualities on K&P were top notch
I turned to a K&P marathon on one of the Viacom channels on Thanksgiving after not watching it for years and my wife started cracking up during the 3 pumps skit (she had never seen it)
if you look at that skit, they had two full football teams in pads and uniforms running plays with multiple camera angles just to film those 3 pumps a few times

and this isnt a slate to what key and peele did. the difference to me is while chappelle was clever/smart/funny. KP was clever/smart/whitty but def not half as funny

but as someone else said if the skits were cut down it may have made the show much better. it reminds me of the the kid in class who got jokes but goes a little to hard and its not funny anymore. where Chappelle show skits alot of the time ended at teh right time making you want more and allowing it to marinate.

ALSO: where are this contrarion views on chappelle coming from today on this board . sounding like when faizon was hatin on dave. look at where kev is now and where dave is. kev is out of touch and his shyt dont ring the same anymore(because he trynna keep his corporate image) chappelle still funny and gone thru stuff your avg person may not relate to but is still able to talk about it in a way regular people love it.

Key & Peele's problem is they don't know when to end a skit. They have a funny joke and then just let it drag and drag.

This was a big part of the reason I found it hard to get into K&P. The sketches were 4 minutes longer than they needed to be.

The first 30 seconds were spent figuring out where they were going
The next 30 seconds was when you got the joke
The next 30 seconds you're laughing at the well executed set up and punch

Then there was 3-4 minutes left

Im talking the skits. The vast majority are not funny. And some of the funny ones back then are cringy like The nikkars. Excluding rick james, prince, and leonard Washington, I dont care for any of the skits now


Key and peele have more diversity of topics and perspectives in their skits.theyre underrated around here

I see what you're saying, but CS is almost 20 years old. Some of those sketches are bound to not age well. It's probably worth another thread, but in general comedy doesn't age nearly as well as other genres. As with most comedy, CS referenced a lot of things that were super specific to that era (pop culture, politics of the time, etc.) and over time those references get more disconnected and become less funny. I wouldn't expect to watch CS in 2020 and laugh my ass off.

dave kind of is his own genre. in the same way you say someone like prince can be their own genre. you see peopel try to replicate but it dont hit the same

I can agree with K&P having better acting but I can't name one classic K&P skit off the top. Meanwhile, CS has a memorable skit basically in every episode.
