How badly does a leak affect album sales?

I doubt it makes much difference. Most albums hit the internet before the street date or shortly afterwards so it's not like buying it secures you a copy before anyone else.

If anything it should encourage artists to raise their game - I downloaded Kendrick's album, gave it 5 spins or so, and decided it's worth dropping a few $ on. Same with The Weeknd's Trilogy which I've already heard hundreds of times, but it's worth the money. For me it's more about supporting the artist than owning the music.

1. depends on whose album is leaking. if a jay-z album leaks most people who are gonna buy will still buy it. if a new will smith album leaks, you can make an argument some people who woulda bought it will just cop the leak.

2. leaks just feed people early. people who only d/l leaks are gonna do it anyway. they'll just wait till someone who bought it uploads it the day it drops.

3. a leak could help some people. say asap rockys album leaks and its better than liveloveasap. someone like me, who doesnt plan on buying it, will be in line to buy it first day. and the opposite, if an album expected to be good flops it could fukk his sales up. ask lupe fiasco.

No matter what anyone says it affects sells to a certain degree. Those who download the album are not going to go right back and but the same album when it is actually released. And that takes away from albums sold. Point blank period.

depends on how loyal the fan base is, if they not loyal shyt doesn't have to leak at all and people will still bootleg it to hell and back, but if the fans support they will cop it regardless

I'm not sure how Kendrick's fan base gonna react, but lot of them are cacs so that's good news for him in terms of sales

I download and buy fairly often. I never buy without listening first. The only sales that they would potentially lose are those who are turned off by the quality of the music. For example after listening to 'Lasers' I decided not to buy the album; I have bought his three other albums. The rest weren't going to buy the album in the first place, and all the leak did was get the artist's work out to more people who may support him in the future (whether that be through album sales or concerts).

you in the minority with that one, most cats not buying shyt even if it's their fav artists, why spend $10 when you can listen to it a week early for free?

I copped Lamar's album on itunes and I'm waiting like a crack addict till Tuesday for it to drop

I think it did have an effect before when people were buying albums. As of right now I think it only affects first week sales...

But still, who buys albums? I think only hardcore fans of a certain artist or music lovers who really enjoy the whole experience of sittin' an hour throughout the whole album, the sound quality and like collectin' cds.

Most people I know dont even download whole albums but only the songs they like.
