to be honest, once Kane, KRS, Rakim, G-Rap...etc hit their mid 30s nobody was really checking for em like that except for a small group of us hiphop purist who respect the game and its elders

Jay, Nas, Eminem (people hate on him now but at 40+ he can still spit and sells millions) and a select few are the only handful of rappers that were relevant from their 20s well into their 40s

Most of their peers from the 90s are nowhere to be found except a small few

Havoc is still sharp on the mic and boards but as much as I loved P he kinda fell off lyrically at or around the time of Infamy. His whole flow got slower and it seemed like he stopped trying to be a "rappity rapper emcee" (which is what I wanted from him)

Sean Price imo got better with age

Once Wayne hits 40 you can add him to the list also.

This is a million dollar question but people will give you child’s play answers.

I think that it’s the intersection of mad factors.

Jay has a great work ethic. He constantly practices his craft

Even back in the 90s he was releasing an album every year. Back then, most rappers would release every 2 years.

Jay's style of music could age well. He wasn't the gutter, hardcore, thugged out rapper.

He was always about the fly life, excess, and success. Jay lived that out in his real life back then and now. It wasn't just bragging, it was reality.

In his 40s, what he talks about is his life. He is authentic and credible in that regard.

Are we solely talking his commercial success or are we talking about the quality of his music? If we're talking his commercial success, it's because he's Jay Z, an anomaly among rappers. A select few people are blessed with tremendous good fortune, being in the right place at the right time, etc, and he was one of them.

If we're talking music quality, he's had mad ups and downs...for every American Gangster, there's a Kingdom Come right before it.

He had ups and downs in his prime. :yeshrug:

For every Blueprint there's a Blueprint 2.

For every Black Album there's a Vol. 1

People were calling him washed prematurely during MCHG up to I got the Keys, but he came back with 4:44 and EIL

He's had his up and downs like most long tenured vets and has enough of a mainstream profile singles wise where it didnt get noticed and right now hes creatively on the up and up again
