I'm not buying the Melo being out of shape angle. He's about where he's always been physically, it's just that he's always been a player who only contributed scoring the basketball and if he's not doing that, it's glaring how bad he is.
His knee issues have definitely zapped his athleticism, but not his first step as much as people think. He's completely incapable of finishing at the rim and that's what's killed his first step. He can't finish with contact and most of the time he just heaves it at the rim or backboard and tries to get his own rebound. He can't even draw fouls...It's hard to watch.
His game hasn't evolved at all and he doesn't know how to affect the game if he's not making contested midrange jumpers.
He gets zero lift, he can't move well around the floor and is completely obsolete on defense. If he isn't out of shape, then his body has completely failed him. He can't contribute even if he evolved his game because he can't move and hustle down the floor.
What was his best year and did he ever play with a good PG who can assist well? I remember Andre Miller back in Dener (not sure Melo played with him)
Melo doesn't move well period, doesn't move without the ball well either. But he was a beast for a while In DENVER.
Post up spin was lethal, I won't say it's a weight issue cuz he was never fast and he can still put up 20 a game.
I think the new NBA style just changed completed.
And lebrons style is just more favorable but still risky since he's so ball dominant and unable to be in a system.
Melo just stops the ball too much.
The one time he played with a pass first PG was his only notable season with the Knicks which was with Jason Kidd. Of course he was better in Denver because he was younger but his game wasn't really the problem, the problem is he hasn't taken good care of his body as he's gotten older.
If you point to one thing LeBron does better than anyone in the league it's just that, maintaining his body. Often people joke and say he works on his body more than actual ball skills like shooting and handle but I actually think that's 100% correct, and it's worked for him because he doesn't have to play in a system and can just basically freestyle with shooters around him.
